Matt Chapman, one of the better all-around players in baseball, will be with the Giants for a long, long time. The 31-year-old third baseman signed a six-year, $151 million extension on Wednesday night, the second largest contract in Giants franchise history.
As with every long-term contract for a baseball player, there are two questions to ask:
1. Is this contract good for the franchise in the near future?
2. Will this contract still be good for the franchise in the more distant future?
And the answers to both are typically the same with every nine-figure contract. The answer to the first one is, “Maybe. We’ll see. Could be.” The answer to the second one is, “Probably not.” If you write those questions and answers down on index cards and consult them for every potential signing, congratulations, you’re a baseball analyst. You’re hired, and you’re going to do a great job.
