Raiders and Chargers. Last game of the season. If they tied both went to the playoffs. People were saying they could just take a knee every play. Like you said, both teams played full out. It actually ended up in OT and after both teams traded FGs, the Raiders had the ball in Chargers territory late in OT and appeared content to run the clock out. Chargers coach Brandon Staley called a time out. Raiders then ran the ball for a 10 yard gain. They ended up kicking a FG to win.

I would have played for the tie, if for no other reason than to stick it to the Steelers (who would have been the odd man out if both the Raiders and the Chargers had made it in ).
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

Whichever team, Mets-Braves, wins Game 1 today, clinches playoff spot.

That team is likely to use backups in Game 2, and not waste better pitching with playoffs coming up.

So a split is pretty likely. Not guaranteed, but likely.

Whichever team wins is going to hold out their starter for the 2nd game. I would think it would be a bullpen game then. Yes a good chance this will be a split as most double headers are anyway. If I were the D'Backs I wouldn't be making any solid plans for tomorrow other than going home for the winter.

I think the winner of game one will play their regulars in the field/in the lineup. But yeah, they'd be crazy not to try to preserve their pitching for the playoffs starting on Tuesday. They'll try to win... but they're definitely not going to take extreme measures.

I pointed this out in another thread, but MLB probably has told both teams to play all out and not to sit any regulars in game 2. This is because the betting sites that are now partners with MLB would be furious if that happened.

I'm sure the betting sites can figure out how to set odds based on the circumstances. MLB and the teams involved have an obligation to make sure that second game isn't a sham.

I'd say the teams - especially the winner of the first game - have an obligation to keep their players rested and healthy for the playoffs. It's tricky for the game 1 loser. Win and you're in. Lose and you're out. Even playing a lineup of reserves is not a guaranteed win. Even the White Sox won 4 of 6 during the last week.

The issue the betting sites will have is that betting on game 2 is problematic. I would imagine most gamblers would stay away from it, if they thought that one team could tank it. I know I wouldn’t bet on it.

Are you nuts? If gamblers thought one team was going to tank it, bettors would pound that game in record numbers.

I said, “could tank.” I would never bet on a game if that I thought that was a possibility.

You bring up a good point, though. If say the Braves win game one, and announce they are pulling their regulars, I would have to imagine the betting sites would be forced to take that game off the board. Everyone would be betting on the Mets, making it impossible to set odds on it.

Re: 2024 MLB News and Notes #2

Again, these guys are very good at setting odds in various scenarios. The winner of the first game will be a sizeable underdog in the second game. But it will be on the board.

Really, no one wanting to bet on the game is a non-event the sites won't care about. They get plenty of action elsewhere. It's only trouble for them if they have exposure because they set a line that everyone pounds and they lose a bunch of money. But even then, half the money would probably be given back in MNF parlays.

On BetMGM, you can get the DBacks at 35-1 to win the World Series right now. THAT would be a bold bet! LOL
