Reds Place Andrew Abbott On Injured List Due To Shoulder Strain

Reds Place Andrew Abbott On Injured List Due To Shoulder Strain
The Reds announced that left-hander Andrew Abbott has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 20, due to a left shoulder strain. Right-hander Alan Busenitz has been selected to take his place on the roster. To open a 40-man spot for Busenitz, catcher Austin Wynns has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

    More to come.

Cincinnati Reds LHP Andrew Abbott lands on injured list with shoulder strain
On Friday, the Reds put left-hander Andrew Abbott on the injured list because of a left shoulder strain.

That makes three members of the team's opening rotation currently on the IL, including Hunter Greene (elbow) and Graham Ashcraft (elbow).

And a fourth, Opening Day starter Frankie Montas, was traded last month.

The Reds, who have lost five of their last seven, are using an opener, reliever Buck Farmer, for the start Friday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

It’s called limiting innings without stating it. You’re not going to send him down. Going to the bullpen does not help because he would be available only once a week at best.

I really hope that's the case because going into the offseason with multiple young SPs you're building the team around having medical issues is less than ideal.

If I’m wrong the board has the right to banish me into the cornfields. It’s just too convenient now that this pops up. In the olden days the arms got tired and sore. You went to the bullpen. Look at the pitchers from the 50s through the 70s. You had guys with 25-30 starts and 35-40 games pitched. Your arm got sore and you could pitch through it maybe. But you were not going to be effective so you sat it out in the bullpen. The team would use you in case of an emergency for some innings. Or you just hibernated there for a week or so. The teams basically used relievers longer to cover innings. You can just go through teams in BR and see this. Gullett started 30? Games in 73 while relieving in another 15. Freddie Norman was always jerked around like that in 74-76.

Yes I know it’s different times but that’s the point. You can’t do that now so any tweak. Any mild soreness not based on much other than hey it’s an excuse to limit innings and get another pitcher up here.

That’s all I’ve got as a plausible theory.

Re: Reds Place Andrew Abbott On Injured List Due To Shoulder Strain

This young rotation was a source of so much excitement & hope.

Hunter took the next step and became a legitimate ace. Now injured; seems minor, but we don’t know for sure.

Lodolo is seemingly always hurt and has the mental toughness of an ice cream sandwich.

Abbott has faded badly both years and has not had a high inning count. Maybe hurt, maybe being shut down for maintenance. Either one is far from encouraging. The guy is 25 y/o. Threw 109 innings last year and 138 this year. And he’s clearly not able to handle even that meager workload.

Ashcraft is hurt and frankly isn’t that good when healthy.

The 2025 team is a lot more than a healthy Matt McClain & CES away from contending.

Feels like everyone in this organization is constructed from wet cardboard.

I think RZ is looking for a durable ace pitcher. That is unlikely to happen in today's game. A team needs 9 or 10 starters with many receiving regular rests during the season to alleviate the strain on their arms and shoulders. Options are valuable; the swing man able to make spot starts is very valuable.

    Based on what?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

At this point, the club hasn’t provided any information on when Abbott suffered the injury or how long they expect him to be out. He last took the ball on Sunday, tossing 83 pitches over five innings. His velocity was down a bit, per Statcast, with his fastball averaging 91.6 miles per hour. He was at 92.6 mph the previous start, perhaps indicating he wasn’t 100% last time out.

Regardless, it’s an unfortunate development for the Reds and their rotation. Abbott has been a mainstay this year, with a 3.72 ERA over his 25 starts on the season. Him and Hunter Greene are the two team leaders in innings but Greene landed on the IL last week due to elbow soreness. With Abbott now joining Greene on the IL, the club is without the two pillars of their rotation. That’s on top of Graham Ashcraft and Brandon Williamson, who are also on the IL.

Absences have been a key storyline for the Reds this year. In addition to those pitching issues, their position player mix currently has Wynns, Jeimer Candelario, Jake Fraley, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Matt McLain and Nick Martini on the IL. They also didn’t have Noelvi Marté for the first 80 games of the year due to a PED suspension, lost TJ Friedl to the IL for a while, amid other issues.

Despite those challenges, the club is 63-64 and hanging in the playoff race. They are currently five games back of Atlanta for the final postseason spot in the National League.

How long until MLB implements a pitching machine because pitching is too dangerous?
