Reds To Promote Rhett Lowder

The Reds are going to promote pitching prospect Rhett Lowder, per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic on X. The young righty will start for Cincinnati on Friday, making his major league debut. The club will need to open spots on both the active and 40-man rosters to make space for Lowder.

Will be interesting to watch, but I’d rather he just finish the season on a high note in AAA. Very little to be gained by this.

I'm surprised they are using up a 40 man spot for the winter by promoting a guy who doesn't need to be promoted. I hope it works out, but even if he pitches well for 4 or 5 starts, what does it prove? We already know he's a very good prospect. That won't change. We also know he's completely unproven at the big-league level. That won't change either no matter how well or poorly he pitches.

I guess it proves that the Reds aren't going to add to the rotation over the winter.

I think it proves that the Reds are going to base their decision on what to do about a rotation that was horrid in 2023 and fell apart in 2024 based on 5 meaningless starts in September.

The Reds are pennywise and pound foolish and that was proved, long, long ago.

Reds aren’t going to decide based on 5 outings. Reds have decided. Expect Lowder to start game 3 or 4 of next Reds season.

As I said earlier, if Lowder is the Reds rookie in the rotation in 2025, I'm fine with it. If more than 1 of Lowder, Aguiar and Spiers start 2025 in the rotation it's a huge mistake.
