Thom Brennaman returning to TV as a 'more positive broadcaster'

Thom Brennaman returning to TV as a 'more positive broadcaster'

“I’m just so excited and so grateful that there’s somebody out there who’s willing to give me another chance,” Brennaman tells me in a far-ranging interview

Brennaman, who turns 61 Sept. 12, admits he was too negative and critical on Reds TV in his final year.

“I think I became a little too negative on the team there towards the end (on Reds TV). I’ll be a more positive broadcaster,” he says. “I think my perspective is different. Maybe I lost along the way how fortunate I was to be in the positions I was in.

Thom was negative towards the Reds? You think? Yes, I know there are people out there who are Thom stans who say that in light of recent performance and performance while he was here that he had a right to be negative. But he was always negative towards the players. If they didn't execute he seemed to take it personally - much like his father did in his latter seasons. The thing is that by and large, fans love the players. Yes, there are always some that we want to fire into the sun but deep down we know they are trying their hardest to succeed. I certainly don't recall Thom taking ownership and management to task. If being negative is your shtick, great. But be an equal opportunity hater.

I agree with all of this, and I'd add that there's a difference between criticism and negativity. Nothing wrong with being critical when it's deserved.

Nobody ever gave a rats behind about Thom Brennaman's opinions on baseball, he has an inorganic sense of the game and was a poor conduit for its nuances

His refusal to embrace any modern stats and consistent negativity was a complete turn off.
I actually think he is good at football. As long as he wasn't doing a ohio st game or a Michigan game. He openly cheered for Ohio St. And openly cheered against Michigan. I'm not a fan of either team. But if your doing a national broadcast you aren't supposed to favor a team.

"there towards the end" lol, ok Thom, yeah it was just a problem there at the end buddy

So glad he's gone, but probably only a matter of time before this braindead ownership group brings him back.

Not everybody wakes up every day on the smiling side of the scoreboard.

    Not everyone scampers home.

I didn't hate him with the Reds, but I didn't love him either. I will say, I thought he was surprisingly good at Football.

The negativity wasn’t what got him canned.

Re: Thom Brennaman returning to TV as a 'more positive broadcaster'

I think ideally a baseball team's broadcaster gives me the feeling of a sunny half-drunk day at the ballpark. Some levity and a laidback demeanor go a long way. Sure, when things the game gets tight, it's time to tighten up as a broadcaster. But for the many slower sections of the game, the PBP guy needs to be a good hang.

With Thom it was like watching the game with your mother-in-law.

Obviously I know that. I was listing reasons that I thought he stunk at his Reds job. The reason he was fired doesn't need to be discussed in this section.

Thom Brennaman wasn't let go because he was "too negative". Nice try. He's fooling no one.

Thank you! Surprised that no one else in the thread up to you mentioned the truth. I guess people didn't have an issue with it. It's clear that he just doesn't get it.

Yes, it does need to be discussed because it's the truth and contrary to what Thom is trying to push on the masses. The truth should always be front and center.
