    Marte Un-Appreciation Thread

I just need to vent a second here…

I cannot remember disliking a Red as much as I currently dislike Noelvi Marte. I know… he’s basically still a kid, and kids do dumb stuff, but he abuses the privilege IMHO.

The topper for me was tonight when he hit the ball 405 feet to dead center then stood there feeling himself instead of running to first. The ball ended up being caught, but it could just as easily have bounced off the wall, and he’d have been lucky to get a single.

I haven’t really come down hard on Bell, but the fact remains that this edition of the Reds plays the stupidest brand of baseball I can remember from 60+ years of fandom, and Marte is the poster boy for that.

    Okay, I’m done now…

Don’t leave out when he forgot to score from third on the ground out double play.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

What did he say? If this guy has an attitude that he’s made it or he is entitled. How does that look to the rest of the team? How is that developing a winning culture?

Thank you for starting this thread. This all but assures that Marte will finish the season on a hot streak

    Re: Marte Un-Appreciation Thread

I was sitting in the right field seats tonight. The catch Blake Perkins made to rob Marte was an absolutely beautiful catch. Of course, why Marte just stood there watching it is beyond me. The ball was hit well, but it wasn't hit that well. Sitting in my right field seats, it was questionable the whole flight of the ball whether it'd have enough carry to get over. If you're going to stand there and admire a shot to center field in GABP then it better darn well hit halfway up the batter's eye building.

Marte did a very nice job going first-to-third on Maile's single in the 3rd inning ... but then he just stands there on Steer's double play ball and ultimately gets stranded. Then he made a nice slide to score on Steer's single in the 5th inning, but he got a bad jump off second base and that bad jump made a play that shouldn't have been close way too close.

His defense at times just looks uninspired.

I've never been a big vet leadership guy or anything like that ... but I'll admit that Marte could use a healthy dose of something like a Scott Rolen putting him in his place. Next year is gonna be telling. Either he'll snap out of this and make this year a distant memory, or this year will be just the start of a long-term frustrating player to watch.

"Gullett" has always maintained, even as he was enjoying some freshman success last season, that Marte is not very good. Last I heard, just a couple months ago, Gullett remains unapologetic about his Marte views.

Ok. Well thinking he’s not very good based on less than 1 full season is an opinion. But I was thinking he meant attitude wise or something about his personality that he knew about.

If you watched Concepcion from 1970-72 you never thought he would make it as a hitter at all. Worse than Juan Castro. Ray Knight hit over 300 taking over for Pete? Barely hit 270 in the minors.

Yeah, Davey was pretty weak in those early years. Improved his hitting game as much as anyone I can remember.

The third base coach didn't seem to be too interested in Marte going home on the double play ball. Is it possible he was told not to go?

Oh, it's very possible. If you added the baseball IQs of House and Marte, it would be in single digits. Dumber than a third base bag.

Nor should he be apologetic. Like I said last night, with his 10 errors in 43 games or worse yet, an .896 fielding percentage, he’s going to have to hit .400 to make up for that defensive.

Maybe the outfield should be his final destination, after he actually earns a spot on the team, instead of being handed one.

There’s nothing that Marte is doing right now that resembles an MLb player.

I like him as a prospect and value his talent; however, I find him completely insufferable to watch. He swings at everyone, defends horribly, doesn’t hustle… and all this after the suspension that seemed to lack accountability.

I’m rooting for him, but to me he looks like an average AAA guy right now and needs the earn his roster spot.

It all goes back to Bell, it has too. Way too much of this stuff has been going on under his watch.
