Steer or Candy would play third base temporarily, with Espinal providing late inning defense. Marte would be expected to resume third base after a couple of months. This is not optimal but would be a temporary move to avoid another major acquisition. If Reds want to go a further step, they could sign or trade for a third baseman. But I think Marte is still their long term candidate.
Agreed. Marte has certainly shown the ability to make great plays at 3B, he just needs to clean it up. His bat plays there as well, as long as his post-suspension performance turns out to be a fluke.
But if the team decides he’s not the long-term guy there, Bregman would be an interesting target (in lieu of one OF outfield acquisition). He’s a champion and is well-regarded for his leadership. He could have a Scott Rolen-esque impact on this team. He’s probably too expensive though, and his bat has regressed some this year. Probably better to just focus on outfielders. Collier and Stewart aren’t that far away if Marte doesn’t pan out at third.
Not to sound critical, but the formula responses included - trade X, Y, Z non-pitchers with minimum trade value for (never specified - just trade or prospects
believing that Reds dollars will be sufficient for a high-value FAoutfielder. (then the response when he goes/went elsewhere "why would he want to play for the Reds" or the management is too cheap
Not accepting that for a trade to be accomplished the management of each team must believe they will benefit, not just the Reds. IMO the primary surplus assets are pitchers and the Reds have traded pitchers with value in the recent past.

The Reds current philosophy is to avoid trading major prospects. Period.
It will be interesting to see if they change that.
One might assume they will to avoid FA price tags. We’ll find out.
I think Reds would say they’re maximizing their chances of developing good MLB players. By keeping almost all good prospects, the ones who “hit” will remain their property. Once they pick and choose who to keep, who to trade, they are risking making the wrong choices.
This is fine except eventually you have specific needs. If you don’t have ready prospects to fill the holes, you have little choice but to trade them. Or spend for FAs.
Are they at that point? I think they are, but I’m not at all sure Reds think so. Their plan is develop, develop, develop. Will they vary from it in this coming off-season?

I say sign Soto and Elly and fill the stands and playoffs for the next several years. That's my plan and I'm not changing it. Maybe Elly can help facilitate.
May the Lord bless
