Looking Ahead Reds Offseason Contract Decisions

Looking ahead to the offseason, the Reds only have three players who are outright free agents coming off the books for 2025 — relievers Buck Farmer and Justin Wilson, and veteran utilityman Amed Rosario.

But simply looking at free-agents-to-be doesn’t give the whole picture, since some players have options including opt-outs, player options, team options and mutual options and there are also decisions to be made about players who will be arbitration-eligible.

Not sure I agree that Pagan is a lock to stay with Reds. Article says he won’t get more than $8 million, but he could get two years elsewhere.

I noticed that Pagan has a huge split. He’s almost perfect on the road but has been hit hard in Cincy. That reduced my desire to see him back.

I think it’s slightly better than 50-50 to stay, but not a lock.

Agreed. At this point, I’m expecting Pagan to opt out. Was also surprised to see Trent say that picking up Maile’s option is a no-brainer. It’d be nice to find an upgrade at back-up catcher. I and others have suggested Carson Kelly but there admittedly aren’t many other free agent options within our price range or clearly better than Maile.

You never know, but players coming off an injury plagued season rarely opt out. Teams aren’t likely to offer two year deals to pitchers coming off an injury.

I’d agree but it was a lat strain. Wasn’t an arm injury. And he’s throwing well now. It could go either way. Teams with big home stadiums should want him, he’s a good reliever, the issue is fly balls. We’ll see, Trent agrees that he’ll stay, so maybe that’s the answer.

Sadly my coping mechanism for the state of the Reds is satire, snark and emotional detachment.

No one would think it’s serious. Unless you’re stuck in the 50s and 60s no one in baseball gets pay cuts unless they are a FA and don’t sign anywhere else. Or get only minor league or minimum contracts.

Big Questions await Cincy this offseason

It won't take long after the season for eyes on the Reds to gaze ahead to 2025. These final 10 games, beginning Wednesday, could solidify front office opinions about the manager, the coaching staff and the roster itself.

The makeup of the 40-man roster is still a fluid situation because of myriad contractual and health factors. It's also unknown what the 2025 payroll budget looks like.

"A lot of decisions," Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said. “You have to add guys. You have to leave spots open for free agency. There’s a lot of questions. We haven’t gotten to that point yet where we’re making decisions on anything. Get to the end of the season, figure out who’s healthy, figure out where we have to go with everybody."

I'd love to have Nick Martinez back. With his performance since the start of May and being a Boras client. I see him opting out of his $12 million option for a guaranteed 3-year deal for a starting spot somewhere.

Impressed with what Junis has done in the 2nd half. He has a mutual option and has been a blessing since the trade. Junis can be that guy to fill the swingman role of Martinez if Nick leaves to eat multiple innings out of the bullpen, and stretched out as a fill-in starter in case of injuries as he already is doing.
