Players that could be at each minor league level next season

Here are the players that could be in each minor league team without stats. easier to understand this way. I’m counting 195 players. Rosters have to be at 165 sometime before the start of next season. Not sure the exact date. At least 30 players will have to be released.

This isn’t my final guess as to where everyone will be. I’m just getting started. I don’t think Arroyo, Pitelli and Balcazar will be in Chattanooga together for example. Also don’t see four catchers in Daytona

Reiver SanMartin, Michael Byrne, Randy Wynne, Brooks Crawford, T.J. Sikkema, Luis Mey, Pat Weigel, Davis Wendzel, Brock Bell, Jacob Heatherly, and Austin Wynns are all due for free agency. I believe Dennis Boatman was released earlier this season.

These are the guys i have as possible FAs. My list is POSIBlE players that can be on the team. I listed SanMartin because Reds can keep him by adding him to the 40 man roster. Not likely but possible. Some of the others, I believe you are wrong about. and some i just missed.

Re: Players that could be at each minor league level next season

Randy Wynne was outrighted last year, letting him become a free agent at the end of the season. He re-signed with the Reds, but those deals are almost always one-year deals.

Davis Wendzel was outrighted this year, so he's due for free agency.

SanMartin could be retained with a 40-man roster spot, but as you said, that's pretty much not happening.

Jacob Heatherly was drafted in 2017, and Michael Byrne was drafted in 2018. There are both due to become a minor league free agents.

Austin Wynns could be retained, but they'd have to offer arbitration. Not happening.

I was wrong about Luis Mey. He'll be a free agent after 2025.

T.J. Sikkema and Brock Bell were minor league rule-5 selections. I believe they automatically become eligible for free agency after the season ends.

Pat Weigel has previously been outrighted, so he will be a free agent, too.

Re: Players that could be at each minor league level next season

So, I'm trying to figure out a rough idea of who might be in AAA next season-- at least at the beginning of the season. I realized that the Bats could well get rid of everyone offensively-- and not miss much of a beat.

Hinds has massive K issues and while he has all the other tools, hitting the ball is pretty important. Speaking of not hitting, Dunn has proven himself largely incapable offensively. Hurtubise is nothing special; I might keep him, if only because they have so little in the cupboard. He's an adequate AAA leadoff hitter, I guess. Joey Wiemer has some pop and is great defensively, but he doesn't hit. Maybe he can be a fifth OF/ defensive replacement/ pinch runner? Nick Martini, at this point, is a 34-year-old AAAA player. Were Krall to get rid of all five offensive players on the 40-man, replacing them with free agents, I suspect the Reds would be better off.

Sadly, that OF represents the strength of the team. Ivan Johnson looks like he might be a decent bat-- maybe. Francisco Urbaez looks like he can hit. Those guys might stick. Of course, they could also check around and get a better deal elsewhere, as there is next to no chance the Reds protect them. Were I either player, I'd move to a team that might give them more of a shot. (Chicago would be my first call.) Edwin Rios had a monster year-- especially his August-- but the Reds didn't give him much of a shot at all. Davis Wendzel, we hardly knew ye. The infield is absolutely barren.

The AA Lookout roster is nearly as bad. No, check that. It's worse. Far worse. Tyler Callihan is going to be the Bats' biggest "star"-- and that assumes he hits moderately well in the AFL and doesn't get hurt. Again. Everyone else is a bag full'o meh that managed to lose 30 more games than they won last season in AA. Too, every one of those "prospects" will need to be put on the 40-man roster this off-season. Fat chance, that. Why, then, would the Reds want to keep anyone off a team that was the worst in minor league baseball last year?

    Got a clue?

    Yeah, me neither.

Right now, were I the GM, I'd have Tyler Callihan on my AAA roster as an offensive player.

    That's it. He's the guy.

And he's the guy only if he can prove it in the AFL. If he struggles there, I'd be totally fine with jettisoning him too.

I don't think I've ever seen a situation like this in my years of following minor league baseball.

They're set up for a unique opportunity, then. There are going to be several guys who should be decent former major leaguers available on minor league contracts. Krall could offer a 40-man roster spot to several guys-- and a clear opportunity shouldparent club Reds struggle. Were I an OF, corner IF, or C looking for an opportunity, Cincinnati might be my first call.

I think the Reds will be aggressive with Arroyo. Krall wants something to show for that Castillo trade. Arroyo looked good in ST last year. With a good showing in the AFL and ST I think Arroyo could start in AAA.

That's complete conjecture and would likely be damaging to Arroyo's development. Unless he totally kills it in the AFL and in Spring Training, I don't think there's any way he begins the season in AAA.

The Castillo trade is the biggest trade Krall has made. I think it's part of the reason why Marte was called up this year after hitting .151 in 12 AAA games. He clearly wasn't ready. I think they want to show the fan base they got something for an ace SP. Now that Marte is looking rough the focus shifts to Arroyo to salvage the trade. Krall has already fired Bell and there's really no where for him to hide now as far as job security goes. I think they'll be aggressive with Arroyo unless he just totally tanks.

I guess it depends on what you consider aggressive.

I would consider promoting a 22 year old 3B who can't play the position defensively as aggressive. Marte had less than 60 starts at 3B before the Reds called him up in 2023. At no point and time has he looked like a guy who can handle the position on a consistent basis. His fielding % at SS and 3B has been in the .920 range which tells me he's not an IF.

The first call-up was genius. Dude hit .316/ .366/ .456/ .822, and, with CES, kept the Reds in the playoff chase until the very end. No one else on that team was hitting.

2024 has been a whole other kettle of fish, for sure, but Krall's initial move was prescient and then some.

I look for at least 2 of Hurtubise, Hinds, Weimer and Fairchild to be DFAd. To many 4th outfield types on the 40 man roster. maybe they return on a minor league deal.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arroyo start the season in Louisville, Especially if he has a good AFL. Can’t have him, Balcazar and Pitelli all start in Chattanooga.

I don’t think Ivan Johnson or Francisco Urbaez will be free agents.

Pitelli, at this point, is not much of a prospect at all. Much like Acosta, Torres, Ascanio, and Faltine, he's fungible and will be sent where the Reds need depth.

I'd be low-key shocked to see Arroyo in AAA without spending a day in AA, as he and Balcazar can play with the rest of Chattanooga's prospects rather easily-- Balcazar and Arroyo can both play both SS and 2B, Jorge has already moved nearly completely to CF, Stewart can play part-time 2B and part-time 3B, and Collier is learning 1B in Instructs to play both 3B and 1B.

If there's a logjam, in year's past, they've erred on the side of caution, keeping prospects in the lower level early in the season.

Re: Players that could be at each minor league level next season

Chattanooga has a chance to be a really solid club in 2025. Prospects abound, especially up the middle.

    OF Hector Rodriguez [L]
    SS Edwin Arroyo [S]
    2B/3B Sal Stewart [R]
    1B/3B Cam Collier [L]
    1B/DH John Michael Faile [R]
    OF Ethan O'Donnell [L]
    UT Carlos Jorge [R]
    C Logan Tanner/ Cade Hunter [R/L]
    OF Jay Allen [R]

I suspect Leo Balcazar repeats Dayton, as the Reds will want both he and Edwin Arroyo to get consistent innings at SS. (Sammy Stafura might well stay in Daytona for a month or so as a result.) Arroyo's going to be one of the bell weather guys here. He has a real chance to be a difference-maker offensively, with speed and power that he got to consistently over the second half of 2023. It took 150-ish PAs for Arroyo to settle into Dayton that season, but when he did, he showed an 800+ OPS bat with enough speed and pop to be a 15/40 guy. He also looks like he'll be a defensive asset as a SS or slum it as a 2B. Either way, he's a top 100 prospect who could go ham. One to watch, for sure. Not sure if Arroyo makes it to Cincinnati before he's traded. There's a real chance he's dangled for an impact bat elsewhere.

Cam Collier was the Reds' MiPotY. He's built like a fire hydrant and when he hits the ball in the air, it stays hit. He'll need to work on that swing and approach, but looks like he has both time and talent enough to figure it out. I wouldn't be shocked to see him in the back-end of some top 50 lists and nearly all top 100 lists. He's still only 19 and could develop further. I'm hoping he really approaches this off-season with an eye on weight training and getting his body in tip-top shape. That K rate is okay now, and his BB% is exemplary. Old man skills, those. I'm hoping the hit tool blossoms a bit. While not sure if he can ever approach that torrid August, I do think Collier will end up a decent player. If he can stick at 3B, he'll be a far better prospect, but that doesn't matter, IMO, as much as his hit tool and power combination. For Collier to be an impact player, he's going to have to be a .500 slugging, .375 OBP masher. His other tools demand an elite bat. I'm not sure if he's that.

Sal Stewart has done nothing but hit since getting drafted in 2023. Dude's 144 wRC+ was 15% better than Colliers, and he's also proven he can handle 2B defensively. Stewart reminds me a bit of Aaron Boone, in that he's a tweener, but he has far better patience. I think he'll end up a 55 hit tool 70 approach guy. (That's All-Star upside, fwiw.) His speed has been a bit of a revelation. Dude's not a statue, obviously. If I were betting, I'm guessing he becomes a plus glove at 3B (supposedly good arm), with questions about whether he gets to all his power. I think he's a 20 HR guy in the GABP, with 15 SB to boot. Put that on a .380 OBP, and he's a fantastic fit in just about any lineup at any spot aside from cleanup. I'm guessing he'll be in a couple Top 100 lists. (Fangraphs has to love his approach, surely, and his age.) He's underrated, IMO.

Lots of mix-and-match guys beyond the top three prospects. The most underrated of those is almost assuredly Ethan O'Donnell. O'Donnell's capable of playing all three OF positions and was 24% better than league average in the Midwest League last season. (This, after dominating for a few weeks as a 2023 6th round draft pick out of UVA.) Not sure if he'll have the power you want in a corner OF, but speed and patience look great and hit tool looks more than adequate. He hits LHP better than RH. That's a really good sign for a possible second-division starter. Were O'Donnell a legitimate CF-- elite defensively instead of just adequate-- I'd likely have him in my top 10. (To be clear, I have no clue what he's capable of in CF, but I suspect the Reds know he's no better or worse than Allen/ Jorge/ Rodriguez.) If given 600+ PAs, he looks like a .250/.320/.400 guy with double figure HR and 35 SB. In CF, that's fantastic. In RF, that's Jake Fraley.

Speaking of the other three would-be OF, Rodriguez, Jorge, and Allen are all pretty similar, with warts aplenty but production as well. The good news is that all three can play multiple positions and should be solid to exceptional defensively. Allen could be a monster if he can find any power to go with his speed and exceptional patience. That hit tool is problematic. He's still young, though, and hasn't really had a ton of PAs in his quiver yet. Jorge had a poor 2024 season. He looks like he sold out for power instead of relying on his game-changing speed. I'm guessing he figures it out, at least a bit. He definitely needs to alter his approach, as he's K'ing at a 30+% clip. That's nearly 10% too much. Rodriguez is his opposite-- a flea who forgot to run. (Part of that, I'm sure, is a late-2023 season broken leg/ ankle.) Hec-a-tor has some deceiving pop much like Jorge, but just refuses to walk. Were he and Allen to combine a la Firestorm, they'd be a top 100 guy. As is, Rodriguez might still end up a useful part of a major league bench. All three of them are likely major leaguers, if only for sporadic playing time.

John Michael Faile might not ever sniff the major leagues, but he's a really nice fit for the Lookouts. He spent most of last season with the ACL Reds before a two level jump late in the year to Dayton, where he killed the ball for 10 days then went dry. Faile's calling card is his power. In just 70 PAs, he ended up with 3 HR and 6 2B. That's a .457 slugging percentage. As a 1B, then, he's got enough power to keep teams honest about pitching to Collier. He can protect the guys in front of him adequately. (I'm choosing to basically ignore his monster numbers in Arizona, as he was way too old for the league.) However, Faile was signed as a catcher. He only played one game at catcher in Dayton (out of the 16 he spent with the club). Were he a legitimate catcher, those offensive traits would make him a leading candidate to have a rather long career as a C/DH/1B hybrid with league average-ish OPS+ numbers buoyed by OBP and power totals. It doesn't look like the Reds believe all that much, however, in his capabilities behind the plate. As is, he's probably a fine AA power guy similar to Nick Northcut.

Finally, there are two catchers on the list. They catch. They do not hit. At all. They were relatively high draft picks, as the Reds seem to enjoy punting on relatively high draft picks by choosing college catchers. Both Tanner and Hunter are examples. Sigh. Still, they'll hit 8th or 9th and try not to be a massive drag on the batting order while handling the pitching staff. Alfredo Duno can't get to the upper minors fast enough. Woof.

Re: Players that could be at each minor league level next season

I think there is a good chance Jorge starts the season in Dayton. I also don’t really consider him a utility player. I think the decision has been made that he’s a CFer. Personally, I would like to see him continue getting some time at 2B.

I would expect Cam Collier to play mostly 1B next season. I don’t think he’s a good enough athlete to play any other position. He is the one high ranking prospect I would be looking to trade in a major deal

Maybe if Cam plays 1B you can keep Arroyo, Balcazar and Pitelli all in Chattanooga. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sal Stewart getting some time in the outfield but understand if he don’t. I think he’s a very good defender at 3B
