    Arizona Fall League 2024

    Here are the 2024 Arizona Fall League rosters

    Reds (Glendale):
    Edwin Arroyo, SS (No. 3/MLB No. 67);
    Connor Phillips, RHP (No. 15);
    Jose Acuna, RHP;
    Tyler Callihan, OF;
    Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 1B/3B;
    Arij Fransen, RHP;
    Luis Mey, RHP;
    Carson Rudd, RHP

    Arroyo had a good head of steam with a strong finish to the 2023 season, with high expectations for a start in Double-A in 2024 when surgery needed to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder in March ended his year before it began. He’ll still be just 21 years old for nearly all of the 2025 season. At one point, Phillips was a Top 100 caliber pitching prospect, one who touched the big leagues last year. But he lost feel for the zone so much, the Reds sent him from Triple-A back to their complex in Arizona to get straightened out. The good news is he posted a 2.49 ERA and .238 BAA over five games with Louisville upon his return in late August.

    Most interesting Reds AFL, at least for me, in some time. I can't wait to see how Arroyo does and to see what the Reds have done with Phillips to get him back on track. Pretty immediately important stories to watch too in CES and Acuna, maybe even Callihan.

    My goodness, that's a fascinating list of AFL players.

    CES should absolutely rake. He's slumming it a bit in the AFL, but needs some PAs to show that he's both healthy and ready for the majors in 2025.
    Biggest issue: Health? Plate approach? Pick one.

    Phillips could, if he does well, stake a claim to that fifth starter's spot at the major league level.
    Biggest issue: Showing his control is all the way back. Getting innings under his belt.

    Acuna could become the second or third option in AAA as SP depth.
    Biggest issue: Showing his stuff is all the way back. Innings.

    Callihan could become a AAA starter at either 2B or OF.
    Biggest issue: Health and production. Show his hit tool is for real.

    Fransen, Mey, and Rudd
    Bigguest issue: Questionable production despite great fastballs. Control. Lack of spots on the 40-man roster-- or a lack of opportunity.

    McLain will be playing in the instructional league according to Gordon Wittenmyer.

    McLain will now be participating in the Arizona Fall League, not just the instructional league... I forget where I saw that yesterday.

    Callihan takes the first pitch into right-center for a Single.

    McLain's first swing goes 418 feet, but foul...eventually strikes out.

    CES up with Runners on 1st and 3rd. Sac Fly to shallow right thanks to Callihan's speed.

    RBI-Double to deep left-center for Arroyo.

    All in the 1st Inning.

    7-0 and Callihan coming up for the 2nd time in the 1st Inning (new pitcher). Only two outs by McLain (K) and CES (shallow fly-out to RF for SF). All five non-REDS reached base (HR, two 2B's, 1B, BB) in the 1st.

    Callihan, I think replay would have shown him having beat out an infield hit, but he was called out. Callihan has great speed. Can't wait for him to reach the Major League Club. He'll push someone off the roster.

    With White Sox brass in attendance, they may get interested in Arroyo as part of a package involving Robert and Flexen.

    This is really cool to see.

    McLain's 1st PA in forever.

    Arroyo's 1st PA in forever.

    CES's 1st PA in a very long time.

    Callihan's 1st PA for me ever.
