Re: Terry Francona is the Reds' new manager

3 takeaways from the Reds hiring Tito By Anthony Castrovince
It was a mid-September day, and Terry Francona was sitting at home in a rocking chair -- far removed, physically and emotionally, from the pulse of any playoff race or pressure.

As we talked over the phone, he sounded bubbly. He was recovered from multiple surgeries that addressed some of the health issues that compelled him to step aside as manager of the Guardians after 2023. He was enjoying golf, babysitting his grandkids, even attending a picnic with some old high school buddies. He was very clearly loving “retirement.”

So of course, he took the Reds job just a couple weeks later.

Francona’s three-year deal with the Reds is the first stunner of, I’m sure, many in the Hot Stove season, and it makes a few things clear
    1) The Reds are serious about 2025
    2) This is good news for Dusty Baker, Mike Scioscia and Lou Piniella
    3) The Ohio Cup runneth over

I will be referring to him as Marshal Tito.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

No word yet on how Francona feels about Skyline coneys.
This is what I don't get when everyone talks about Cincy chili. Everyone who is not familiar with it and has just heard about it acts like it's only available with spaghetti. And I know people like their "Ways."

But man, those cheese coneys are where it's at.

Nah...when the last of the BRM is gone, Reds ownership will live off the legacy of the 1990 team. That buys them another 15+ years, minimum.

I love that 1990, was around for that, but the BRM has more draw. Also, good to see you back

Couldn't agree more with this article, at least with points 1 and 2.

Thanks. I'm going to try to make occasional appearances here, and possibly try to reconcile with baseball, though I cannot abide the DH in the NL and the ghost runner rule.

I did not watch or listen to a single inning of any Reds game this year, and I can't say that I missed it. In fact, it was liberating. I did not keep track of the standings, and I had no idea what the Reds' record was until I got the news in my news feed on my phone that David Bell had been fired. I didn't know who had been having a good season and who hadn't (though it wasn't hard to guess), and I had no idea how many injuries they had. (I checked on Baseball-reference.com on Monday after the season was over, and I was dumbfounded at the number of names that I didn't recognize.) I do know that a number of folks here at RZ told me that I had picked the wrong year to check out, because 2024 was going to be "the year". Evidently, it just turned out to be more of the same, and I didn't miss much.

I was mildly surprised but not shocked that Bell was dismissed. I always thought that he was a capable manager who got a bad rap from a lot of people because of who he was and where he was from, but I also thought that there was nothing special about him, and that he wasn't that different from a lot of other managers who get hired and fired all the time.

I am very surprised that the Reds hired Tito, however. I can't imagine why he would take this position unless he had been given certain assurances regarding the makeup of the team -- he certainly doesn't need the money. Francona is the type of manager that I always preferred and gravitated toward, so it will be interesting how everything plays out.

Klu you quite literally missed almost nothing by skipping 2024 besides fine seasons by Hunter Greene, Tyler Stephenson, and Elly De La Cruz being wasted. But I do like to think that this hire augers for at least a 2025 worth checking out.

Oh, c'mon. There's not a single die-hard Reds fan here who could go a whole season without checking the standings, following up on scores, etc. And everyone is just echoing what someone else said, regarding Francona. You don't have to try and make a grand re-entrance at the expense of the Reds.

What made you think any part of this post was a good idea?

I don't know you, and you don't know me well enough to say something like that to me, and question my integrity. I took a year off from the Reds, and it was a relief. I have communicated very clearly as to my reasons for my sabbatical. I don't have to justify myself to you or anyone else, but you are a reminder to me as to why it was a relaxing summer for me away from the Reds and RedsZone. I thought that maybe it might be time to rejoin the site, and find my way back into some enjoyable conversations about baseball, but I now see that this is not to be. You can't go home again. So good luck to you and the Reds. I'm outta here.

    Native Cincinnatian here.

Sure I like Ways... but I 've been crushing coneys for decades.

I'm betting Francona gets a Skyline commercial ala Rose and Perez in the 80's for Gold Star
