Seattle has money and they still aren't doing it.
Seattle's two-year contract last offseason went to Mitch Garver, not Mitch Haniger.

Under PBO Jerry Dipoto, the Mariners have given out multiyear contracts to free agent pitchers, but not free agent hitters.

Would anyone trade two years and $32 million of Jeimer Candelario for one year and $15.5 million of Mitch Haniger? Would the Mariners do that trade?

Wrong Mitch. My bad. I knew it was only one. Didn't realize it was position players, but that makes sense given the high quality of pitching that the Mariners have, they are certainly worth multiple years. But, aging hitters? No way. Keep them on 1-year contracts.

I wouldn't give Mitch Haniger $15.5M for one season. I wouldn't give Mitch Haniger $550K for one season. He's plummeting like a load of bricks as he ages into obscurity. He'll be 34 next season. Don't want him anywhere near this roster. I'd rather play Bubba Thompson. .620 OPS last season. .631 OPS the year before. No thank you. Trade for Victor Robles to play CF for us and the Mariners can still have a solid Outfield. Robles is their 4th Outfielder as it is.

Robles signed a 2 year extension last summer with the Mariners.

News: the Cincinnati Reds are leaving Diamond Sports Group, per a court filing. They'll need a new broadcast partner.
I know I just posted this in the other Bally bankruptcy thread, but I've been nervous about how this could change offseason plans.

Beyond the vet starter (Martinez?) and corner OF solutions, I would like to see the Reds make a deal to being in at least a couple of young vet or MLB-ready guys to address other needs (backup catcher, 2nd OF option, bullpen guy). Maybe with India or Steer (if they are really quality) as the Reds principals.

There are lots of backup catchers available on the free agent market-- I think I'd prefer they not waste resources buying a cheaper option that is likely to provide about the same production.
Love the idea of dealing from their abundance of would-be utility and/or guys (India, Steer, maybe Espinal, maybe Candelario, Marte, CES, maybe Fraley) to find a (better/ more interesting) 2nd OF option and/or a bullpen guy.

I can't get the Yanks' Everson Pereira for India trade out of my head, as the Yanks are likely to need a 2B (with Gleyber Torres a free agent) and would probably like to get a "smart" guy like India.

Jeimer Candelario is not worth $32 million over two years so the trade woiuld be a swap of underwater contracts.

FWIW Baseball Trade Values assigns Candelario a negative $22.7 million trade value and Mitch Haniger a negative $15.6 million trade value.

I posted this on another thread and will post here as for a trade idea. Alexis Diaz and Jake Fraley for Wyatt Langford? Rangers are looking for a left handed hitter and bullpen help. Langford is going to be a stud that you can pencil in the middle of the lineup and RF for the next 5 + years.
    Opinions?

0% chance Texas does that. Langford put up 3.9 WAR as a rookie, and had a .784 OPS in the second half. He's likely going to be a 30+ HR guy who doesn't strike out much. Any deal for him starts with Lowder or Burns.

The Reds have no TV deal for 2025. Their stake in the TV network they co-owned was sold for $1.00. Apparently, the Reds took a reduced return in income to become co-owners. Millions less. That's now worth nothing.

Hopefully something can be worked out.

They are very ready to move on from that and balance out their team better.

That extension was signed before they added Arozarena. It was done before they fired their Manager and the new Manager's first move was to replace Robles in CF with Julio Rodriguez (Julio's original position and Julio got lights out better after that making this move permanent). Arozarena has the LF job. Nobody is going to substitute any games for him. Same goes for CF. That leaves only one Outfield spot and the Mariners have 3 players for it...Luke Raley, Mitch Haniger and Victor Robles. That's at least one too many. Luke Raley goes to Arb 1 next season, so the Mariners have pretty good control. He costs only $800K for them this season, and they prefer him in RF over Robles. They also have 5 other Outfielders in AAA to pull from, in addition to the option of replacing all of them by going after Teoscar Hernandez.

After taking over the leadoff spot, Robles was one of MLB’s hottest hitters over the final two months, and the Mariners signed him to a two-year contract extension worth a guaranteed $9.75 million through 2026. The Mariners have Robles penciled in as their starting right fielder and leadoff hitter going into next season.

“Vic’s an energizer,” Dipoto said. “He brings life to the group.”

    Charlie Goldsmith moving on…

Hi. Thank you to The Cincinnati Enquirer for five great years. I appreciate the relationships I’ve built with readers, coaches, players, fellow media, my colleagues and my hometown.

I’ll be moving on from The Cincinnati Enquirer. I decided it was time to seek the next opportunity.

I’m looking for what's next! I’m looking forward to entering free agency.
