They need long-term answers. I wouldn't blow half their remaining budget on a 37-year old coming off a league-average season.
They also have Candy, CES and Steer available for 1B, and they're likely to add another IF who can play there for much less than what Goldy will cost.
Reds have 3-4 holes in their roster and about $20MM to spend, Goldshmidt makes zero sense to me.

I've resigned myself to the fact that Candalario is probably the Reds' plan as primary 3B. They gave him one of their largest-ever FA contracts less than 12 months ago to be their 3B, so I can't imagine they have any other plan there.
I think Steer is locked in at LF as well, with CES at 1B. No primary DH.
Just assumptions based on the way they have always operated.
The way I think they see it:
Stephenson - C
CES - 1B
McLain - 2B
EDLC - SS
Candelario - 3B
Steer - LF
Friedl - CF
Fraley/Fairchild Platoon - RF (If they are acquiring a new starter, ie Ward, this is the obvious spot)
If they swing a trade for Roberts Jr., maybe they move Freidl to LF and Steer to 1B. Or they just move him to RF and call it a day.

Don't you wish the Reds would just throw the budget out the window and sell the farm? How about this: trade for Kyle Tucker, Taylor Ward, and Alex Bohm. Release Candelario. Sure we'd have the 30th ranked farm system, and would lack pitching depth, but we'd win a few more games.
Last year, Tucker was on pace for a 9 win season. Reds right fielders had -1.6 wins.
Last year, Ward had 2.3 wins. Reds left fielders had -1.9 wins.
Last year, Bohm had 3.0 wins. Reds 3rd basemen had -3.9 wins.
Add all that up, that's over 21 additional wins, winning the division and propelling the Reds far into the playoffs.
But, hey, at least we fans get to say how much we love watching Arroyo develop.
Get. Better. Players.

Agree, but I’d refine it a bit more to “get better veteran position players.” Reds group of young players is quite good even with the disruptions of injuries, etc. They have some good veteran pitching now, especially in the rotation.
But the veteran position group is weak. Stephenson (the best), Fraley, Candy, Espinal. Maybe you include Friedl though he has about two seasons’ worth of playing time.
It’s inconceivable that they won’t add a couple of veteran position players. Plenty of time left to do that. Hopefully they’ll be good ones.
