    Re: Trade Candidate: Taylor Ward

    A .323 OBP and a 24.6% k/rate.

This seems remarkably similar to the tripe the Reds were running out there in 2024. Yes, he has good power and a solid glove… but he’s not a culture-changer or difference-maker. I wouldn’t want to pony up legitimate prospects for a player whose overwhelmingly most likely outcome is, “oh, he’s okay.”

Just pay the $80MM - $100MM and sign Santander. He has more power, strikes out less, and won’t cost prospect capital. He’s a butcher in the OF, but that’s why the good lord gave us the DH.

Honestly, the price is right with Ward. He’ll be way cheaper than a FA target and IIRC, we get him for 2026 as well.

What do the Angels want? They are a decidedly irrational actor, so I’m guessing the either want MLB-ready players or 17-year-old DSL stars.

I’d start the package with CES and toss in one of the Bats from Dayton - non-Stewart-or-Collier edition. But again, I have NO idea what they want. It’s like dealing with the Rockies.

Would Steer and Marte for Ward do it?

    Why would Petty be untouchable?

I’m as hopeful as the next guy when it comes to prospects, but geez. I mean… he throws hard and is young for his level, but man. He’s a fringy top-100ish guy with VERY mediocre K and BB rates. I think it’s a good bet that he’ll be an MLB SP at some point, but… a good one? That’s in serious doubt IMO. I think he has a pretty low floor. If someone wants to give us an established MLB regular to bet on the upside, I’d be very tempted.

Maybe not for Ward specifically, but for someone.

“Untouchable” is not a word I’d use for Chase Petty.

    Tom Petty maybe.

Good thought - Steer for Ward straight up. Deal. Steer is cheaper, younger. Angels get more control and save money. Reds get a better position fit, better defender. One for one, no prospects.

Let’s stop trading Marte. He’s damaged goods. By far the best play is to keep him next year and try to restore his value. Everyone here seems happy to get rid of him, which just shows his value is at a low point.

Steer for Ward. Ok with me. If Angels want materially more, they can fry ice.

Also, do Josh Smith from the Rangers next. Seems like an elite defensive player at 3B, and while he doesn’t have huge power, he’d make out IF defense borderline elite with Elly and McLain, and provide quality 5-holeish lineup production (110 OPS+ in 2024).

He bats left handed, but actually hits LHP better than RHP for his career. He OPS’d .774 off of LHP in 2024.

He’s a competent SS, so nice insurance if, god forbid, something happened to Elly. He’s an excellent defensive 3B, and he can play a little OF too. Rangers should have Seager and Jung ready for Opening Day 2025, so moving Smith (3.2 bWAR IN 2024) may be a priority.

They need help in the OF, and we’re no help there. They also need SP… I don’t know if we’re in a place emotionally in which we’d give up Abbott or Lodolo… but that’s what they’d want.

I've made a list of possible guys. Smith wasn't on it, but I'll get to him (if this doesn't run out of steam).

    Nice target.

I've never heard that idiom before-- mad props for its use here.

    Made me laugh.

I like this idea. I'd give up one of Abbott or Lodolo for Smith. He'd help solidify the infield defense and has some upside with the bat.

Reds would have to use a prospect or cash to beef up the SP, and it still doesn't solve the OF, but improving defense should also be a priority.

Why not offer that for Rooker instead??

I feel like the price for Rooker might be too rich for the Reds' blood. Especially for a team looking to decrease the amount of DH's on the roster.

I'd love a bat like Rooker's in the middle of this lineup but I think they'll emphasize bringing in more well-rounded players, sort of like Smith or Ward.

I don't see the Reds trading any SP this off season at the MLB and AAA level . Williamson and Aguiar are out for 2025, Martinez will opt out, Junis might opt out, and Ashcraft might not be 100% by opening day. They aren't trading away from the depth they have which at this point is just Greene, Lodolo, Abbott, and Lowder.

    He's a trade candidate that's coming soon.

Personally, I'd much prefer a guy who won't K 30% of the time.

The Reds have plenty of those guys.

    Re: Trade Candidate: Taylor Ward

Reading this thread and several other ML teams next season plans, the possible additions are generally speculative candidates, other than those above the Reds pay grade. I would wager that many teams would believe that Steer would be a very positive addition to their team, the 31st outfielder using MLS 2024 stats. Ward is 24 and Winkler (just for fun is 17) and he is a free agent.

I meant in a trade for Ward. If were going to trade Petty or Burns the return should be a higher caliber player.

A bounce back season from Luis Robert Jr from his All-Star, GG, Silver Slugger days after an injury-plagued season. Plus, Taylor Ward would be two nice additions for the Reds.
