It's not an insane idea to think a lot of guys could close out the season better than they've played so far.

    Guys like:

Geno Stone - wouldn't take much to be improved, bar is low

Sheldon Rankins - has dealt with injuries, maybe he heals up

Myles Murphy - seems to be flashing, needs more time on the field

CTB - has extreme ups and extreme downs, maybe he levels out

Tee Higgins - really rough year because of injuries, would be huge to close it out healthy

Rookies getting time - have to hope guys like Mims, Jenkins, Newton and Jackson will continue playing well and improving

I like to think about what we'd be thinking in late January looking back if they run off a bunch of wins and I think those are the kinds of things we'd have seen.

This is a team that's closed really well in recent years - even last year with Browning wasn't horrible - so have to see if they can do it again here.

Last week Lou Anarumo looked to young up the secondary. Sophomore Jordan Battle pretty much split reps with veteran safety Vonn Bell in both the Raiders and Ravens games, and rookie cornerback Josh Newton took some of the load off Hilton with a career-high 13 and 19 snaps, respectively.

Good post and I agree that more players should improve the second half of the season. It's been an incredibly frustrating year with all these last second losses, but I still believe they can make the playoffs with their talent, weak schedule and the weird standings. Basically, the Broncos are the only team they need to pass (the Colts stink) and they play them later this year. That said, they need to win Sunday night.

I guess that's one way to spin it. Flip side, if this is the defense playing error free ball, then someone needs to be held accountable for constructing quite possibly the worst defensive roster this decade.

They can barely afford the current one. Dont forget that any guaranteed money has to be escrowed out at the time of signing. Thats why they didnt sign Chase, they cant, they dont have the escrow money to do it.

    1. Burrow will want an extension sooner as the QB market will be close to 100M a year at that point.

    2. Bengals cant afford to escrow lets say $75M a year for 5 years, $375M, no way they have that kind of money.

So even if you're right about the first point, we're talking what - 2029? The Bengals just had to put the $219 million guaranteed portion of his recent extension in escrow, and we're worried they won't be able to come up with the going rate five+ years from now?

You can worry about what will happen in 2029 or 2030, and I'll concern myself with the Bengals' more pressing issues - of which, there are plenty.

For decades, the smartest Businessmen in the Cincinnati area placed Mike Brown in charge as CEO of their business alliance for one reason and one reason only...he knows Finance. This is why he avoids Dead Money like the plague (and somebody needs to take a stand with some of the idiot owners like Jerry Jones and that Cleveland scum). He also knows that the best money that can be spent is on Joe Burrow. Burrow will be here on his 3rd contract. Escrow accounts are allowed to draw interest, and the Bengals not only have a ton of money, but they could always borrow against the franchise if they needed to do so.

The Bengals not signing Chase this off-season is so overblown. They probably should have, but nobody has signed their elite first round WRs after year 3. It's not like the Bengals were unique in that. Lamb and JJ also had to wait. Chase will get signed.

13 years ago the Brown family was able to buy back a minority share with $200mm in cash - https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeoza...r-200-million/

The franchise is worth $3.5-$4 billion dollars. They have the ability to access cash. It's their choice not to. You can't tell me these richer owners are mixing their businesses when it comes to income or outlays. They also aren't going to have hundreds of millions of dollars sitting a saving's account.

Burrow's guarantee was just over $140 million. Yes, that's a big up front cash amount that goes into escrow, but it also means that of his contract, $140 million has already been spent.

I believe they also are allowed to earn interest on the escrow, so it's not a total loss either.

    What could have been...

Richard Sherman talking to Jahmyr Gibbs who stated the Bengals had talked about trading up to 18 to get him had Detroit not taken him.

Don’t get me wrong, Gibbs is an exciting young player, but I’m okay the Bengals missing out on him. Taking a RB with a first round pick is still horrible value, regardless if he’s a good player or not. And taking into consideration how the Bengals roster is currently structured, they need all draft capital they can get to build a halfway decent defense.
