I just dont see what would be in it for him. The money is moot. He is 41, hasn't even been retired for 6 months and has 120-150M in the bank.....Id be doing some fun stuff all over the Globe with my friends and wife/GF.

Not trying to show Will Benson how to fix his broken swing in Goodyear AZ.
Exactly. I'm not sure why these megarich former ballplayers would want to sign-up for giving up 8 months of the year to be a coach for $50 Grand or whatever. That's pocket change. Coaching is for guys who need the money. Some guys have a burning desire to hang around, but Votto strikes me as a guy with lots of interests. He'll probably come to Goodyear for a week or two and maybe check in once in a while when the team happens to be close to wherever he is.

He knows most everyone in the organization. That's reason along to come work with the REDS. No wife wants their husband hanging around the house when they've been used to him being gone all the time for their entire marriage.

It's not just about what he wants. I guarantee you that his wife wants him outside the house doing something.

I'm sure she doesn't want him on the road for 8 months. If he's going to be a hitting coach or assistant hitting coach, that's the commitment he'd be making for very little money. Like I said, a week or two in spring training is all I can see him committing to.

    AFAIK, Votto is single.

Players usually retire because they can't physically compete at the level they are accustomed to. But, almost to a man, they say while they don't miss the game; they miss the guys. Not to mention they have done this for most of their life and being away from it is a big adjustment. Coaching scratches that particular itch while not having to go through the physical part.

As for Votto, if I were a betting man, I would not bet on him being a full time coach.

Grown men with the intellectual curiosity that Votto has and who have spent every single summer of their existence being a baseball player tend to want to be somewhere else the summer after they retire.

I'll go as far as saying for certain that we will never see Joey as a regular coach, day in and day out

I suspect Votto is going to end up either a color commentator or a manager. Might be a hitting coach first-- or might just go right from the booth to the dugout.

Either way, I suspect he'll end up very good at it.

Agree completely. Most coaches do it because they aren't set for life, they need an income and baseball is all they know. A few star caliber guys do it, but not many.

I think it's more likely that he's coaching a high school team somewhere than part of a full time MLB staff or broadcasting crew.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was managing a Zoo. I would like him as a Reds broadcaster, if I get a vote.

For what it’s worth, Votto has a longtime girlfriend, Jeanne Paulus, a nutritionist and health coach, I don’t have any information on her feelings about being with a retiree.

She's just planning on sending Joey out each morning for fancy coffee.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Re: Reds Trying To Bring Votto Back

Joey Votto as 3b coach would be entertaining.

He is young and healthy with a bunch of free time on his hands. He needs to find something to do, and whatever that "something" is, it won't be for the money. Perhaps he ends up somewhere making a great living that many of us can only dream of, but he will do it to keep him occupied and engaged in whatever his passions sit. Obviously he knows baseball well and is passionate about it, so perhaps coaching somewhere is his calling either full time or as a roving instructor or with a HS or running an academy. Or perhaps he opens up a fancy coffee shop with the goal of simply covering costs and talking the ear off and getting to know everyone who comes into his store. Or maybe he works a local golf course making sure each foursome is moving along in a a timely fashion, volunteers his time with local charities...

Whatever it is, he has a lot of time to fill and he shouldn't need the money, so its all about what fills his passions best.
