    Classic Era HOF Nominations

Can someone tell me how they come up with these nominations? From the list below, I would love to see the Cobra make it. Any chance Davey Concepcion gets a nomination down the road? The comments below are not mine.

⚾Steve Garvey: An iron man with a National League record of 1,207 consecutive games at first base, batting .294 with 272 homers, and four Gold Gloves to his name.
⚾Tommy John: A lefty with a renowned career-saving elbow surgery, 288-231 record, and 3.34 ERA.
⚾Dick Allen: An MVP in ’72, with a career .292 average, 351 home runs, and seven All-Star nods.
⚾Dave Parker: A slugger with a .290 average, 339 homers, and two batting titles.
⚾Ken Boyer: A key player in the Cardinals’ 1964 World Series win, boasting an 11-time All-Star career.
⚾Luis Tiant: Known for his iconic windup and Fu Manchu, Tiant’s career includes 229 wins and leading the AL in ERA twice.
⚾John Donaldson: A Negro Leagues pioneer who reshaped the game with his multi-faceted roles over 30+ years.
⚾Vic Harris: A Negro Leagues standout and seven-time pennant-winning manager with a .303 batting average.

Let’s talk about two contemporary outfielders. They both started their careers in the mid-1970s. They both had cool nicknames. Let me break down their careers in two different ways:

    First way:

Outfielder 1: Seven-time All-Star, MVP, three-time Gold Glove winner, twice led the league in hitting, three times in total bases, once in WAR, once in RBIs. He stole 20 bases in a season twice and hit 25-plus home runs in a season six times. He scored 100 runs three times and drove in 100 runs five times. He got more than 10,000 plate appearances in his career.

Outfielder 2: Three-time All-Star, never received even a down-ballot MVP award, never won a Gold Glove, led the league in doubles once, and led the league in getting hit by pitch four times. He never stole 20 bases in a season or even 15 and he never hit 25 home runs in a season, either. He never scored 100 runs (his career-high was 99), and he never came close to 100 RBIs. He got fewer than 8,000 plate appearances in his career.

    OK, now the second way:

    Outfielder 1: 40.1 career bWAR

    Outfielder 2: 55.7 career bWAR

There are 29 position players in modern baseball history who:

Are eligible but not in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Have not been tainted by a potentially disqualifying scandal.

    Have 55 career Baseball-Reference WAR.

There is little doubt in my mind that Chet Lemon is the most underappreciated of the bunch., the other guy is Dave Parker

Davey was one of the greatest fielding short stops in the history of the game. You had to watch him to appreciate just how good he was. He was poetry in motion. His range was unreal. And I think he invented the 1 hop throw on astroturf. His hitting was fair, but certainly not great.

But, the thing is, not until Davey's career was over did the shortstop position became a big contributor to offense. In that context he deserves to be in the hall of fame same as Luis Aparicio(though his SBs stand out over Davey's).

In that context, I'd say he's at least borderline deserving. But Davey has one very big issue that isn't his fault. He was on one of the greatest batting lineups in baseball history. While other shortstops were put at the top of batting orders due to their speed, Dave wallowed at the bottom of the order because the Reds had speed at other positions that hit better (Griffey and Morgan). This meant he scored less runs and also got pitched around more due to the pitcher, and/or Geronimo following him in the batting order.

I personally think he deserves in. But the fact he was on such a great batting lineup which left him at the bottom of batting orders and that the shortstop position started producing much more offense after he left the game, it'll never happen. That and the fact he didn't do back flips when he took the field

Allen, Boyer, Tiant, and Tommy John are defensible picks, considering who's already in. Boyer's the easiest choice, IMO. He was a consistent 5.0+ WAR guy for nine seasons, playing 3B then CF (then 3B again) for a really good Cardinal team. He's basically Bobby Bonilla with Matt Chapman's glove.

Pinson was a great player for the Reds. But HOF great, I'd say the wrong side of borderline. If this isn't a homer argument(and I'm not saying it is) and is unbiased, wouldn't you have to put Cesar Cedeno in also? He acquired his very similar and maybe better stats playing most of his home games in the Astrodome while being a right hander(meaning he faced right handed pitchers more than Pinson did lefties)

The idea that Steve Garvey goes to the HOF before Pete Rose makes my blood boil

Grew up watching minor league baseball in Charleston and, as far as I know only two of the players I saw are in the Hall, neither for doing the same thing they did here---Trevor Hoffman and Tony La Russa. But three of these players came through Charleston, one whom I saw (Dave Parker) and two who played here earlier (Tommy John and Luis Tiant). Since I highly doubt that Omar Moreno or Mike Fischlin will be nominated soon, I'll root for these guys.

    Dick Allen, easily.

    Luis Tiant, easily.

    I'll add Fernando Valenzuela.

    I'll add Dale Murphy.

Murphy (2-time MVP) and Valenzuela were both victims of the Steroid era that made the first half of their careers forgotten, where the Steroid users (practically half of the league) were so numerous that it placed non-steroid users into average players or worse.

Definitely agree on Murphy. His peak, while short, was best player in MLB level. I always think guys like him get the short stick some times because of the shortened peak.

As a comparison, Id rather include a Murphy then a guy like Paul Oneill or Harold Baines who never had a true peak but compiled numbers from being above average for a long time.

O'Neill's a legend. He's got a hand with a ring on every finger. All of the core guys from that Yankees dynasty team - including Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte - belong in Cooperstown. They set a standard we may not see matched again. I think they nailed the fame part so hard that a veterans committee has to let them in.

Murphy was always on a crappy team, too. That didn't help.
