Rhett Lowder

Lowder was the 7th overall draft pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. The right-hander started the season with High-A Dayton and quickly pitched his way to Double-A Chattanooga.

After struggling through his first 10 starts in Double-A with a 6.85 ERA, Lowder settled down and had a 0.62 ERA over his next five starts, earning him a promotion to Triple-A Louisville. In Louisville, he pitched just one game, throwing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts before earning a call up to the big leagues.
He continued to impress in his six Major League starts. Over 30 2/3 innings, he had an ERA of 1.17 to go along with 22 strikeouts. In four of his six starts, he did not allow a run.

"Obviously, Lowder flew through the system, Reds Senior Director of Player Development Jeremy Farrell said. "He figured some things out in Double-A that would set him up to go on the run that he had in the big leagues. I feel like he'll only continue to get better as he gets more comfortable with the professional game.

The young pitchers behind Greene are key for contention, IMO, especially if Martinez devides he'd prefer a LTC over a one-year, $21M payday. One of Lodolo, Lowder, or Burns has to be a difference-maker if the Reds are to be pennant-bound. (Abbott can be added to that group, though his stuff seems quite a bit more ordinary and less likely to develop into a TOR guy.)

If Greene remains an ace and one of the young guys turns into a second ace, they'll have a floor of a .500 team. They can also cobble together a playoff rotation that no one will want to face.

Not sure if Lowder is the guy we saw at the end of last season or not. If he is, the Reds will be good for about half a decade. If he's not, at least there are more fish in that particular barrel.

Rhett Lowder's emergence in the 2nd half has me prettyexcited about this years starting staff. Im putting Lowder in with Greene and Martinez as a pretty solid top 3.

Lodolo and Abbott are strong 4th/5th options.

Burns, Petty, Phillips, Ashcraft + whatever scrap heap guys.

If Reds could get 120+ from Top 5 guys I think theyre a playoff team.

I think he is jsut saying don't assume improvement from Lowder is guaranteed.

It'd be really hard to improve on an ERA under 2.00.

Improvement would come in the form or making adjustments, going deeper into games, etc. He really didn't strikeout a ton of hitters (6.5 per nine) and probably walked a few too many (4.1 per nine). He was definitely homer lucky as he didn't give up any homers in 30 innings, so obviously that will change.

Lowder has a better Bronson Arroyo vibe to me. I think hes a guy that will be able to hold up to a full MLB season workload.

If Burns and Petty show they are capable of filling in if injury arises by Late May- Early June we could really have another round of exciting young arms.

It's better to draft college level kids who have physically filled out more, who have gained more experience, and gives an organization a better persepctive on their talent vs a raw, 18 yr old. In most cases, they'll move faster thru your system IMO.

If Lowder did make the team I'd think they'd still have him on PC/Innings limit.

Lowder’s future will be the classic dance of MLB hitters seeing him multiple times and adjusting to his weaknesses. If he can successfully respond and adapt will be the key to his ultimate success or failure.

Going deep into games is pitching 5 or 6 innings. Seems relievers pitch almost 1/2 of the innings nowadays.

I got to see him pitch for Wake Forest and was very impressed and thrilled when we signed him, I think he can be really, really good.

Lowder pitched 120 innings in 2023 and 139 innings in 2024. I don't think he'll be on any kind of innings limit next year.
