Reds Challenge Noelvi Marte To Step Up

Reds Challenge Noelvi Marte To Step Up For Third Base Role
During the final week of the regular season, Krall, Brad Meador and Freddie Benavides had a sit down conversation with Noelvi Marte.

“We had a direct conversation with him about where his year went sideways, what he needed to do and where he needed to grow to become a big league third baseman on a regular basis,” Krall said.

This sit-down should have been done last July, before he ever was reactivated from his PED suspension. Sounds as if Francona’s already on top of things. That can only bode well for the future of this team.

It says it happened in the final week of the regular season. Had nothing to do with Francona.

There was reason to suspect he'd come back from that and continue performing well. Instead he came back and was more-or-less the worst player in the majors over the final 2 months. That's a different conversation then "don't do drugs, moron".
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Almost like he may have actually been on something that helped him and then had it taken away... hmm....

There was one time in my career where my boss had a “direct conversation” with me. It wasn’t pleasant. But it had its intended effect on me and I straightened my act out. Hopefully Marte will do the same.

Reds Challenge Noelvi Marte To Step Up

The concern is, he was challenged to step up his game, yet his numbers continue to be terrible. He has a long long way to go, for sure.

Kid needs a total reset. He shouldn’t play in Cincinnati until June at the earliest.

He should be erased from any future plans with the Reds. If he turns it around, great, but his success in AAA/MLB is so far away in the rear-view at this point. It means nothing.

I’m more hopeful on CES, I’m willing to sort of pencil him into a backup role. Marte not so much.

I'm hoping having Tito will be a huge part of that reset. I suspect maybe players were just too comfortable with Bell. But no doubt he's now in a position that he needs to earn big league playing time.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Well, he's only 23 so there is a good chance that he corrects himself, at least it's a performance problem and not something worse (Bernie Carbo's drinking at age 23 in 1971)

All trades are iffy when it's a package deal, as the M's try to deal Luis and his "friendly contract" the Reds need to squeeze some value out of the the remaining pieces to make the deal look good for them. It's only been 2.5 years since the trade, seems longer

Yes, thank you. It's been obvious since August, but people label you a heretic for saying so. I don't understand why so many think he should still be the starting 3B on opening day. The plan you've laid out is exactly the plan they should follow. They won't get anything but spare parts by trading him and force feeding him into the line-up will only reinforce his failure and do who knows what to his head.

Go down, play well, stay under control, make the plays on defense and make good PAs for a couple of months and then he's ready for another look.

I think that’s the most realistic scenario unless he goes off in the spring. I’m expecting to see Candy or Steer at 3b opening day.

Rushing Marte back to the majors last year remains one of the weirdest, most counterproductive choices the Reds have made lately.
