San Diego, CA -- The San Diego Padres today acquired catcher Miguel Olivo from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for catcher Miguel Ojeda and minor league right-handed pitcher Nathanel Mateo. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.
Olivo, 27, appeared in 53 games for the Mariners this season, batting .154 (23-for-149) with five home runs and 18 RBI. He also appeared in 24 games for Seattle's Triple-A Tacoma affiliate, batting .233 (21-for-90) with three home runs, 26 RBI and 13 runs scored.
Named to the Topps/Major League Baseball All-Rookie Team and Baseball Digest's All-Star Rookie Team in 2003, Olivo led all American League rookie catchers that season in hits (75), doubles (19) and runs scored (37). Over parts of five Major League seasons, Olivo has appeared in 269 Major League games with the Chicago White Sox (2002-04) and Seattle Mariners (2004-05), batting .219 (172-for-786) with 39 doubles 25 home runs and 90 RBI.
Ojeda, 30, hit .137 (10-for-73) with three doubles, one triple and six RBI in 43 games with the Padres this season prior to being optioned to Triple-A Portland on July 7. While with the Beavers, he batted .196 (11-for-56) with three home runs and five RBI in 16 games. Over parts of three Major League seasons with San Diego (2003-2005), Ojeda has a career batting average of .224 (83-for-370) with 12 home runs and 54 RBI in 166 games.
Mateo, 24, appeared in 47 games for Double-A Mobile this season, going 3-4 with a 3.14 ERA (18 ER/51.2 IP). Originally signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent on August 13, 2003, Mateo has a career 9-7 record with a 3.01 ERA (38 ER/113.2 IP).
Olivo was considered a good prospect when the White Sox sent him to Seattle in the Garcia trade. As we have with FeLo, sometimes patience is needed.

Well, there is two ways to look at this. First, we're 11-5 since the All Star break. In 141 innings, Reds pitchers have given up 75 earned runs (78 total) for an ERA of 4.78. Five games account for 33 of those runs. In the other 11, the Reds have pitched 99 innings and allowed 32 runs or an ERA of 3.01. Not too shabby.Well folks, this is *officially* a winning streakGreat job, entire team. Wow this team can be special next year if we get some pitching.
So, either we need to get new pitching or we need to keep working with what we have. I don't know the answer, but I am encouraged with our current staff. Not estatic, you understand, just encouraged.
