Johnson grounds into a force out at 2nd. 2 outs.

It sounds like Encarnacion made a real good play.

Mercker (nor any other pitcher) can't "back into" a save. If the pitcher doesn't enter the game in a save situation, then he can't get a save.

Now he can create a save situation for Weathers...which he has just done.

Good start to the long road trip. Reds take 2 out of 3 against the Nationals.

Just got home after watching this one. Way to go REDS! No giveaways just a beautiful late summer afternoon for baseball. That was the PAID attendance maybe 30,000 actually in the seats.

The Nats broadcast team kept showing guys in the stands reading newspapers. I guess that proved to be smarter than leaving early, since the game got more interesting there at the end.

    Re: 8/25 Game Thread

Just got back a little while ago from the game. It was great to see the Reds in person again. It had been 15 years since I had seen the Reds in person.
    Just a few observations:

Over 40,000 attended the game. The Nats went over the 2 million mark in attendance. I would say baseball is a hit in DC.
I sat in the section behind the radio and TV booths. I saw Marty about noon. He came out and I waved at him. I had my Reds cap on and I think he noticed that. He said hello and asked me if I had been the previous two nights. I hadn't and he said I hope we win one for you today and went into the booth. Very friendly of him to acknowledge me that way. I didn't see Joe at all.
Saw quite a few Reds fans around. They made some noise when the Reds did something good, especially after Griffey's homer.
Griffey is really stroking the ball. His two singles were pretty sharply hit. The three pitches before his home run he just missed on. On one he drilled a deep fly to right foul. The other two he fouled straight back. You could tell he was right on Hernandez.
Hernandez didn't have much. For him to keep the Nats in it was just on sheer guts. I think he's runing out of gas just like the Nats as a team are.
Got to see just about all of both teams bullpens. I think Standridge was just about the only one not to pitch for the Reds. I was a little surprised Mercker was brought in in the ninth. I think he has been dealing with some back trouble? Anyway the Reds bullpen made it interesting as usual.
A really good day. You can't beat fun at the old ballpark,as Harry Caray used to say. I hope it's not another 15 years before I get to see the Reds in person again.

I've met Marty and Joe countless times. They are incredible guys and have shown me nothing but class. Marty get's personally attacted her alot, but that's the price you pay when you are a legend.

And I can't believe how long it's been for baseball for you! I feel for you buddy.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

    Re: 8/25 Game Thread

I attended today's game as well. Here are my observations:

Claussen has the makings of a very good pitcher. It was nice to see him pitch effectively for 5 and 2/3 innings.

The bullpen was fairly sharp. Mercker looked good on getting the first batter, but seemed to get ruffled after hitting Schneider. Weather's came in and was lights out, he only threw one ball in getting the final two outs of the game.

Ed E. is a great fielder. He'll be a gold glover within a couple of years.

Dunn's timing seems to be off. He pop out to the OF 4 times, twice swinging on the first pitch. Hopefully, Chambliss will help him find his stroke soon.

I think Willy Mo may be in has last weeks on the Reds. I say this because the OF's defense is very good right now, the Nats were very hesitant to take extra bases on all of the Red's OF's today, which kept the game close until the Reds could pull away.

Griffey, Casey and Kearns all hit the ball well today.

It makes me kind of sad to think that this team is so far out of contention this year because this team looks good. As long as the pitching holds up, this team could really be competitive in '06.

I've seen other MLB games in that time but just not the Reds. Until this season ther was just no NL teams close by and Reds have yet to make a trip to Baltimore. This was the third Nats game I had been to this season. Even though I am 42 years old I still get excited about attending a game. I hope that excitement never goes away.
