I was in town for that whole series. What an awesome game(and year) that was. Those two grand slams along with Larkin's first career GS rank a top my list as the most memorable.Originally Posted by Caseyfan21

I pulled this up from baseballLibrary.com:
I just checked Retrosheet.com and they mistakenly list the same game under two dates. The actual game was the May 13th date.May 13, 1980: Ray Knight breaks out of an 0-for-15 slump by homering twice in the 5th inning of a 15–4 win over the Mets. He is the first Red ever to hit two home runs in one inning.
May 15, 1980: In Cincinnati, Ray Knight has two homers, including a grand slam, as the Reds whip the Mets, 15–4.
When I was dating my wife she was living with her sister and brother-in-law. I was over helping her paint a room for her nephew who would be born later that month. We were listening to the Reds game (you got to love a relationship like that where you can just hang out, paint and listen to the ballgame - I knew I had the right one!) and Knight smacked two home runs. We were absolutely dumbfounded.
From Retrosheet:
In case you're not looking closely, Griffey Sr. also homered in that inning. Again from Retrosheet.com, the 5th inning Play by Play:HR: Knight 2 (5,5th inning off Bomback 0 on, 0 out,5th inning off Glynn 3 on,
2 out); Griffey (2,5th inning off Bomback 2 on, 1 out); Collins (1,6th
inning off Hausman 0 on, 1 out).
So Junior Kennedy also had the distinction of making the 1st and last out in the inning. And lot of "blast from the past" names there. The Reds finished third that season behind the Astros and the Dodgers, but only 3 1/2 games back, again checking Retrosheet there.REDS 5TH: BOMBACK REPLACED NORMAN (PITCHING); Knight homered;
Kennedy grounded out (shortstop to first); AUERBACH BATTED FOR
PASTORE; Auerbach singled to center; Collins singled to center
[Auerbach to second]; Griffey homered [Auerbach scored, Collins
scored]; Concepcion singled to center; Foster walked [Concepcion
to second]; GLYNN REPLACED BOMBACK (PITCHING); Driessen made an
out to center; Bench walked [Concepcion to third, Foster to
second]; Knight homered [Concepcion scored, Foster scored, Bench
scored]; Kennedy grounded out (shortstop to first); 8 R, 6 H, 0
E, 0 LOB. Mets 4, Reds 14.
I think I have one more, but have to research it.
The other game I was thinking of didn't have a Grand Slam in it - the Reds beat the Astros 18-2 on August 3, 1989 scoring 14 runs in the first inning, but amazingly only 3 homers in the game (and two of those were in the 7th!).
Since I mentioned it, here's the play by play for that 1st inning:
I started listening to the game at work, came home for lunch with the inning still going on, took the afternoon off to take the family to the Y and the inning was just ending when we arrived at the pool! Sorry, no grand slam - you can resume that conversation now.REDS 1ST: Duncan walked; Duncan stole second; On a bunt Quinones
singled to pitcher [Duncan to third]; Davis singled to center
[Duncan scored, Quinones to second]; Griffey homered [Quinones
scored, Davis scored]; Roomes singled to shortstop; Benzinger
singled to right [Roomes to third]; Reed singled to right
[Roomes scored, Benzinger to second]; FORSCH REPLACED CLANCY
(PITCHING); Oester doubled to right [Benzinger scored, Reed to
third]; Forsch threw a wild pitch [Reed scored, Oester to
third]; Browning grounded out (first unassisted); Duncan doubled
to right [Oester scored]; Quinones singled to left [Duncan to
third]; Davis singled to center [Duncan scored, Quinones to
second]; Griffey singled to center [Quinones scored, Davis to
third]; Roomes singled to third [Griffey to second]; Benzinger
doubled to right [Davis scored, Griffey scored, Roomes scored];
Reed singled to center [Benzinger to third]; Oester singled to
right [Benzinger scored, Reed to second]; Browning singled to
left [Reed to third, Oester to second]; Duncan flied to left;
Quinones flied to right; 14 R, 16 H, 0 E, 3 LOB. Astros 0, Reds
14.
A series that Reggie Sanders would just as soon forget.Originally Posted by redssouth

Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.
I remember when Dmitri Young hit one into the reds seats at Cinergy Field. I believe that was in 2000.

Not a Red, but I remember Fernando Tatis hitting two grand slams in the same inning for the Cards.
I was also at a game when Albert Belle hit one.
Barry's is my favorite, I can remember repeating over and over "c'mon Barry, c'mon".
I wonder if that is the only Red seat Grand Slam?Originally Posted by redsfan30

Here's a list of red seat home runs. It has Tony Perez with a grand slam but not Dmitri Young.

I remember Kurt Stillwell hitting a slam for his first major league homer back in '87. I actually still have the highlight on tape, having recorded it off of Sports Talk.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.
According to Retrosheet, it was a Grand Slam. Was that the last Red Seater at Cinergy? If so, that would make interesting bookends - the first and last red seaters being Grand Salamis.Originally Posted by BCubb2003
Not a Reds GS memory, but for some reason I maintain a vivid recollection of Dan Gladden's slam in the '87 WS.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
I'm certain that's a record that won't be broken, or doubtfully even matched. The odds of it happening are so unbelievably remote.Originally Posted by StillFunkyB
