Minor league transactions from BA, 4-12

    ---
    Cincinnati Reds

Signed LHPs Vincent Davis, Darrell May and Brian Shackelford, SS Rainer Olmedo, RHP Jason Standridge, OF Jay Garthwaite and C John Castellano. Released C German Melendez. Placed RHPs Daniel Rincon, Justin Mallett and Ramon Ramirez and 1B Jason Vavao on restricted list.
    ---

As we know, Castellano has been released ("assigned to Billings"- whatever, he's being released). Mallett and Ramirez are suspended. Rincon and Vavao... no idea. They may have retired. Melendez was a catcher-turned-reliever that apparently pissed someone off (just two appearances).

The two names we don't know are Vincent Davis and Jay Garthwaite.

Garthwaite, 25, was an Arizona property since being selected in the 14th round in 2002 out of the University of Washington. He's played primarily in High-A for four years, posting a total minor-league line of .282/.333/.491. Lancaster is a hitter's paradise, like most of the parks in the Diamondbacks system, and Jay has struggled in his brief exposure to AA (.189). He's been DHing for Sarasota, and hitting fairly well. He appears to have some power, but if he were a prospect he'd be at a higher level. I assume this was a guy that Bob Miller liked.

Davis is another ex-Diamondback. So Bob liked him, too. An 18th-round selection in 2004 out of Southern, he's a huge (6-6, 245 lbs) guy who's got a career 3.86 ERA (mostly in relief) in parts of two Pioneer League seasons. 16 unearned runs out of a total of fifty allowed makes that look better than it is. With 75 Ks in 79.1 innings, he appears to have bat-missing ability, although at ages 22 and 23 in rookie ball he should be missing bats. He'll be 24 in August, and I haven't yet seen a team assignment.

Both appear to be organizational guys that our new minor-league people knew from previous affiliations.

    In other news:

    Kansas City Royals
Placed OF Alan Moye on voluntarily retired list.
    ---

Strange. Moye was just getting going.

Was (is) Ramirez the extremely skinny kid with a high-90's fastball, but absolutely no other pitching skills? Or was that Alex Farfan?

Why, I wonder, did they sign Darrell May, but then not assign him to a team? Maybe he's damaged goods as well...
