It has occured to me from watching baseball for lo these many years that teams tend not to score as much for their "ace". I remember recently reading something about how Bob Gibson could have easily had another 5 wins if the offense had scored more for him in 1968. As it was, they only scored a little over 2 runs on average for him that year. It was that way with Soto too although some of those Reds teams had an offense that makes this one look like the BRM. Seems Jose Rijo always had problems with his offense scoring for him too. I should look into this more.

Here's one guess at why offenses have problems when their aces are up:
When the season starts, it is the ace of each team squaring off. Assuming they keep the same schedule, then each time the Reds' ace goes, so does the ace of the opposing team. Sure, this is broken up by off days and rain games, but i remember last year that Harang pitched against Carpenter several times.
Just a thought...

That's a good theory. Another pet theory of mine is that the offense knows their ace isn't going to give up a lot of runs so they relax and don't worry about scoring a lot of runs. They score 1 or 2 and figure that'll be enough and they don't need any more runs. Of course your theory is more proveable.
It's the case where the opposing pitcher steps up his game and brings his best. So, expect to see the Houston pitcher's best game of the year.
However, I don't think that will apply today as I think both clubs will score lots of runs. Our first 9-7 game of the year. REDS Win.
