He does strike out a lot, and walks very little. He always has has had a very low OBP. However if he can hit for a high average, that will help his OBP. Keppinger does not walk very much, but he has a high OBP because of his hiiting. He has a high OBP because of his BA right now, but I would not expect that to continue.

Without walks he would have to hit like Tony Gwynn to be what this team needs.

What the Reds are in dire need of is players at the top of the order that can get on base. Cantu is not one of those guys. In fact, if he plays it will likely be at the expense of someone that is better at it. To me Cantu represents what is wrong with the direction this organization is taking and why I fear the future of the Red's offense.

Actually, we have 5 guys with an OBP of .360+. We don't need more OBP guys, we need guys who will hit with RISP to get those guys in.

Not sure which 5 you are talking about, but:

Hamilton, Hopper and Keppinger suffer from small sample size. In the case of Hopper and Kepp, their OBPs are extreemly BA driven, so unless you believe they are .320+ hitters, neither are likely to keep their OBP above .350. In addition Hopper plays the same position as 3 guys with higher OBP(Hamilton/Dunn/Griffey).

Hatteberg is a platoon player. Its nice when he is in the lineup, but he's not going to be there everyday. He might be a bench player next year and likely not with the Reds in 2009.

Griffey and Dunn are the highest OBP guys (unless you believe Kepp is a .350+ hitter), but they are the middle-of-the-order hitters and unlikely to be here past 2009.

If Cantu forces his way into the lineup, it will be at 3b or 1b. That means likely either Hatteberg or Keppinger will not be.

In fact by my calculations the Reds are 10th in the NL in OBP and 7th in Runs scored. That tells me they are actually pretty good at driving runners in. They just aren't get runners on base nearly enough.

I agree that Cantu isn't much when it comes to obp. I think he does give the club an insurance policy though if Votto, or Edwin were to crumble. Keppinger fits in the same role.

I don't hate him as a bench player or AAA insurance. I just don't think he would be content in that role.
