"Wayne stepped up and gave me the second year and that was it. It was a situation where it was very early in the free agent process, but it just looked like the right deal to me with the way the team was, the direction the organization is going in. Then you put the second year on top of that. I'm a little closer to home [in New Jersey.]"

Stanton's option for 2009 is $2.5 million, with a buyout of $500,000. If he appears in 140 games over the next two seasons, the option-year salary vests at $2.75 million.

    sigh.

How about he doesn't sniff that bonus?

Well, one of the ways to assure that that bonus doesn't vest is to cut his ass this winter--pitch him out like New Year's empties.

Doubtful that the option vests...but how scary would it be if he's on the team next year, the team is hanging around for a bit and he keeps his ERA in the 4s? He could theoretically become the LOOGY, which could enable him to rack up the games.

    I'll stop now...I'm scaring myself.

Down by 6 runs Weathers is pitching the 9th inning.

Weathers gives up a home run.

Carlos Delgado takes David Weathers deep to make it a 10-3 game.

I'm actually liking the last four games in that they serve as a stark reminder that the Reds really aren't that close to being a contender. If you want to see a contender in action, watch the guys in the visitor's dugout. Hopefully a little more of this and the Reds will have the courage to stand up and admit the team isn't very good and it's time to do something about that.

Phillips grounds into a double play to end the game.

Probably your manager until 2009. Wayne likes 2-year contracts (see Narron, Jerry).

I like Pete, but Alan Cutler brought up something tonight after the game that had me thinking a little bit. Krivsky is a control freak. Pete supposedly said he'd ask Krivsky what to do with the new arrivals. Speaks volumes, folks. The chances of us hiring a manager who can think on his own is nil. Pete's your man.

I'm beginning to think in order to get a proven manger in here...Krivsky will have to go as well....

A proven manger won't let Krivsky tell him what to do.

For what it's worth...I still don't think Pete gets the job.
