One big worry for next year that I think has all but disappeared is the question of third base. I've been so happy to see Edwin come on very strong toward the end of the season.

    Freel has become expendable...

Was he really ever not expendable?

Yeah.. when he was sent down.. I was worrying if the hype didn't meet the product. But since his call-up he has been playing great and hitting at or above .300 with some pop.

Freel's extension, IMO was WK's second biggest mistake to date (yes, bigger than THE TRADE, Rheal Cormier, Mike Stanton).

REDs owe $7 mm to guy they don't need and NOBODY will want.

LaRue's contract was DanO's doing, so WK had no problem shipping him off to KC with some cash. (KC loved that one).

Doubtful he would do the same with Freel.

I think they'll let Hatteberg walk...

I'd love to have him off the bench, but I don't know if he'll want that role.

I think they'll keep him. He's not going anywhere else to start and Cincinnati seems to suit him. Remember, everyone pretty much thought his career was done 2 years ago.
School's out. What did you expect?

    That's true.

Hopefully they do keep him around then, as Votto's backup.

Luckily it's a team option. What Hatteberg wants isn't really what decides if he comes back or not; Unless you think he'll threaten retirement. They'd at least exercise the option and then trade him somewhere.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

If Freel is healthy, I don't think it's impossible to move his contract. I'm not saying it will be, but I don't think it's impossible. If he doesn't heal, that's a big problem.

I still think the Cormier move was done with an eye towards trading him and it didn't work out. We'll see how Stanton does over the entire life of his contract. So far, it's been dicey.

But enough of that - let's bop these Cubbies again.

I think Hatte is gone, unless Votto is traded.

Reds use a 5-man bench. Can't afford two lefty first basemen. With Cantu, that would make three first basemen. Doesn't work.

I notice Votto is playing against the lefty pitcher tonight.

Didn't realize Freel is signed through '09. Could be hard to move him. Guess he may be back next year.
