Freel was a very, very valuable player. But guys like him wear down pretty precipitously.

Larue, similarly, was a very, very valuable player. But again, catchers don't have long shelf lives.

Still, I'll take the Freel and Larue signings 100 times out of 100 over the signing of a guy like Stanton.

You and I watched a different Larue.

Yeah, in the way that I watch a different Dunn from a whole bunch of other fans.

It takes genius glasses. Do you have them?

And I see a different Freel, but that's what makes the world go around, right?

    I'm excited.

    1. I get to watch (most) of the game.
    2. I get to enjoy the gamethread at the same time.
    3. Puffy gets more opportunites to steal my best lines.

    Agreed all around.

It wasn'tlong ago that Freel had a strong ability to get on base while being able to play skill positions at an acceptable level. That's a nice commodity. Look at Juan Pierre. He was basically Freel without the patience. He gets 10M a year.

LaRue had the ability to provide offense no matter how ugly it looked. I always thought his defense was undervalued too. I'm still dissapointed in just how quickly he wen't down hill. I wanted Ross gone in the offseason and just go with LaRue since we were already paying him and Ross may have had good value in trades.

I don't think they were bad contracts in that there was a decent shot that the Reds were going to get pretty solid players at cheap rates. I still think Freel is a rebound candidate to be a nice utility player again (but I wouldn't hesitate to trade him). At least with those guys there was a good chance of getting good players at below market rates. I might consider both contracts on the risky side, but the potential reward was quite nice.

It beats giving guys like Stanton, Cormier, etc. a couple of million dollars with the upside of being middle relievers and liklihood of blah.

Dunn looked pretty rough against the lefties Monday night. I would have probably given him tonight off and then played him everyday until he reach 40+ homers and 100+ walks and then give him another rest if he needs it.

I believe Freel has become expendable, but I am not sure how many other teams will want a frail 32-year-old for our asking price. Whatever the return is, I am sure there will be some disappointment.
Last year, when he was Mr. Highlight Reel Freel, would have been a more opportune time, but what a difference a year makes.

Griffey is starting to challenge Sean Casey for the doubleplay king.

Junior has been struggling as of late at the plate and on the field.
I am thinking he is growing very tired - been a long year.

Has anyone mentioned Griffey needs a day off recently?

1st and 2nd 0 outs and our three and four hitters up - no runs.

It was a scrappy double play, though. Moved that runner right over to 3rd.
