    A Look Back: BA's 2002 Reds Top 15 Prospects

With all the buzz about the current crop of Reds' farmhands, I thought it may be interesting to look at the prospects from 2002. These are from the 2002 BA's Prospect Handbook:

    1) Austin Kearns
    2) Ty Howington
    3) Wily Mo Pena
    4) Ricardo Aramboles
    5) Dustin Moseley
    6) Ben Broussard
    7) David Espinosa
    8) Gookie Dawkins
    9) Dane Sardinha
    10) Ranier Olmedo
    11) Ryan Snare
    12) Justin Gillman
    13) Brian Reith
    14) Edwin Encarnacion
    15) Brandon Larson

That's a nice run of future Mud Hens there.

In 2002...I'm sure many of those guys were untradable in many minds as well. Granted the cupboard is alittle more full in 2007...but when you realize at most there are maybe 3 somewhat better than average major leaguers on that list...it makes you wonder how valuable some of these "untradeable" guys are.

7 out of 15 have gone on to get more than a cup of coffee in the majors. None have really fulfilled their potential.

    1) Austin Kearns
    3) Wily Mo Pena
    5) Dustin Moseley
    6) Ben Broussard
    10) Ranier Olmedo
    13) Brian Reith
    14) Edwin Encarnacion

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I was reading this post and wondering how anyone could think Encarnacion didn't fulfill his potential. Took me a bit to realize the post was from 2007!

EdE was always underrated by BA. Meanwhile, they loved that other 3B, Andy Marte.

I still get a kick out of that too. It's like you almost had to apologize when you pointed out that Encarnacion kept outplaying Marte at every level.

Many times I found myself scratching my head as to why Andy Marte was rated ahead of Edwin Encarnacion. Like M2 pointed out, EdE outplayed Marte at each level and yet was still underrated for some reason. Ahh well.

BA wasn't the only organization to do this either. BP was absolutely in love with Marte. I still think he has a chance, but most likely he'll never be the "next Scott Rolen."

I think he meant BA looks at the "tools" and might favor them over performance for certain players???

Re: A Look Back: BA's 2002 Reds Top 15 Prospects

    How's this for a lineup . . .

SP Ty Howington (out of baseball)
SP Dustin Moseley (Angels - Majors - bullpen)
SP Ryan Snare (out of baseball)
SP Justin Gillman (out of baseball)
SP Brian Reith (out of baseball)
CL Ricardo Aramboles (out of baseball)

C Dane Sardinha (Detroit - AAA)
1B Ben Broussard (Mariners - Majors)
2B Ranier Olmedo (Toronto - AAA)
SS Gookie Dawkins (Philadelphia - AAA)
3B Edwin Encarnacion (Reds - Majors - Starter)
LF Austin Kearns (Nationals - Majors - Starter?)
CF Wily Mo Pena (Nationals - Majors - Starter?)
RF David Espinosa (Out of Baseball)
UT Brandon Larson (Nationals - AA)

Wow, that's 6 out of baseball; 3 in AAA; 1 in AA; 5 in the majors with only 2 or 3 of them starting. And only one with the Reds.

That's a sad, sad list - let's hope the '07 one looks 15 times better than '02 when '12 rolls around.

BTW, I was on the Nationals' depth chart on MLB.com and saw that Kearns is listed 2nd to Dukes in RF and Lopez is listed as the backup to Guzman and Belliard at SS and 2B respectively. It's taken them less than a year-and-a-half to play themselves to the bench in Washington of all places. Oh, and Wily Mo is listed as the starter in LF. Go figure.

I was so hopeful that Ty Howington would turn into an Andy Petite-type power lefty after his great 2001 season. Unfortunately, that was his best year by far.
