Doesn't David Espinosa still play in Detroit's system somewhere?

Shows a lot of guys vote from their hearts, or stat sheets. I'd love to hear more input from people in Billings, Sarasota, Chattanooga, who have the opportunity to watch these guys in action a lot. Notice I left out Dayton and Louisville, as there are a number of them on this web-site. Although I do really appreciate their input and observations.

    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

I stand corrected - he was with the Mud Hens last year and is now a minor league free agent. With his robust .204 BA last year, he is sure to be a hot commodity.

This discussion makes me think of the first round bust and ex-Red, Cecil Espy. Isn't he also an ex-Tiger?

SP Justin Gillman (out of baseball)
SP Brian Reith (out of baseball)

LF Austin Kearns (Nationals - Majors - Starter?)
CF Wily Mo Pena (Nationals - Majors - Starter?)
RF David Espinosa (Out of Baseball)
UT Brandon Larson (Nationals - AA)

Wow, that's 6 out of baseball; 3 in AAA; 1 in AA; 5 in the majors with only 2 or 3 of them starting. And only one with the Reds.

That's a sad, sad list - let's hope the '07 one looks 15 times better than '02 when '12 rolls around.

BTW, I was on the Nationals' depth chart on MLB.com and saw that Kearns is listed 2nd to Dukes in RF and Lopez is listed as the backup to Guzman and Belliard at SS and 2B respectively. It's taken them less than a year-and-a-half to play themselves to the bench in Washington of all places. Oh, and Wily Mo is listed as the starter in LF. Go figure.

    Funny stuff.

I wonder where the 2007 Reds prospects will be in 5 years?

Forgive the necro-bump, but with such limited discussion in this forum (I have no idea why), I figured no one would mind. Here is RedsZone's 2007 top prospects as voted by us:

    1. Homer Bailey
    2. Jay Bruce
    3. Joey Votto
    4. Johnny Cueto
    5. Travis Wood
    6. Drew Stubbs

    7. Chris Valaika
    8. Sam LeCure
    9. Milton Loo
    10. Sean Watson
    11. Paul Janish
    12. David Shafer
    13. Calvin Medlock
    14. Tyler Pelland
    15. Josh Hamilton
    16t. Josh Ravin
    16t. Cody Strait
    18. Justin Turner
    19. Jon Coutlangus
    20. Wirfin Obispo

2007 is also the year the Reds drafted Devin Mesoraco, Todd Frazier, and Zack Cozart. We may never see a better group of Reds prospects in our entire lives.

Wirfin Obispo, that was such a good name.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Not hard to see how that early 2010s competitive window materialized.

Wirfin Obispo is the pitching equivalent of Roberto Petagine. He is still dealing way down south. His ERAs for the last 8 seasons are as follows: 2.77, 3.43, 1.66, 1.99, 2.98, 2.31, 2.78 and 1.96. He has saved 30 or more games in each of the last four seasons. In 2019, he had an ERA of 1.96. In 87.1 innings of relief, he struck out 12.3/9, while not allowing a single home run.

Let's hope. If the Reds can replenish with resources like they had in 2007, the Reds' window to compete could be a lot longer than expected.
