    2009 Kentucky Derby Thread

    And the favorite is scratched.

The owners of I Want Revenge, an early favorite for the 135th Kentucky Derby, intend to scratch him from the race, Churchill Downs said in a news release Saturday morning. A news conference was scheduled for 9 a.m. ET at the track in Lousiville.

Co-owner David Lanzman, trainer Jeff Mullins and veterinarians Dr. Foster Northrop and Dr. Larry Bramlege were expected to appear at the news conference.

I Want Revenge was a 6-1 favorite as of Friday night. He won the Wood Memorial, a key Derby prep race, and was set to start in the No. 13 gate position in Saturday's Derby.

    My Pick: Friesen Fire

I had a 4 horse exacta box of Chocolate Candy, Friesan Fire, Musket Man, and I Want Revenge that I bet yesterday. Now I guess it is a 3 horse box. I have Friesan Fire acroos the board, and show bets on the other two horses in my exacta box.

Jeez how intrusive was that guy with the mic stuck in Mr. McCarthy's face? I was afraid he was going to knock the old guy down! He's been working 50 years for this, let him enjoy the walk to the starting gate!

I went to my second annual Kentucky Derby tailgating party yesterday at Keeneland. Another fun day.......and it ended with me hitting half of the exacta for a cool $1037.

Did the announcer ever say Friesen Fire? Man a huge favorite, and never even close enough to get a mention once the race starts.

That was one of the most brilliant, inspiring races I've ever seen.

I read somewhere that Friesan Fire's came out of the gate rough and cut open his leg. His trainer said he was bleeding pretty bad after the race.

    Re: 2009 Kentucky Derby Thread

    You are correct, jimbo.

In the Derby, Friesan Fire was knocked right out of the gate by Papa Clem to the outside and got tangled up. He had cuts on all four legs, Cindy Jones said. The colt's handlers did not realize the extent of his cuts until they gave him a bath, she said.

"He ended up with nine cuts on all four legs," she said. "I don't know how he could have done all that [to himself]. . . . It was because he got hit so hard and bumped into horses on the other side. It was like a chain reaction."

Wow, didn't realize it was that bad. He's lucky he didn't cut into a tendon. Hope he recovers 100%.
