Here's his obituary. I too remember him from my baseball cards. RIP Don Paveltich.

Pav beat Johnny Bench out of the catcher position on opening day in 1968 but within two weeks he was injured and when Johnny took over Pav was history when he returned.

My dad was a big Don Pavletich fan while I was a Johnny Edwards fan.

Very good article. He seems to have been a good guy.

Pavletich started the Reds first five games in 1968. Bench started game six and every game after that through the month of May [game 45]. I quit checking 1968's box scores on Baseball Reference.com after that.

No need to check box scores. Check Bench's 1968 game log instead...

    Summary
Team Record in Appearances 76-77 / in Starts: 69-69
Looks like he started 138 games that year.

Thanks. Dave Bristol appears to have ridden Bench like a mule in 1968, as once Bench became a starter he rarely had a day off.
In looking at the link I found something that surprised me. I had forgotten that the Reds had Lee May play several games in 1968 as an outfielder. There were a few games where the Reds outfield was Alex Johnson in left, Pete Rose in center and Lee May in right. All three were good hitters, but gosh the defense. While Pete was a good leftfielder or rightfielder at that point in his career, he sure wasn't Vada Pinson or Cesar Geronimo or Eric Davis. Flanking him with Johnson and May...…..
