One of the great names for a player, especially in the 1960's. Here's the only obit I could find, from the Dearborn Register. I forgot that he was from the area.

I heard about this about a week ago from a now-dormant RZ'er. He had played HS baseball with McCool's son and learned about it from the friend's Facebook page.
I was waiting for it to find the press before posting but that seemed slow happening.
I remember McCool and Sammy Ellis coming up at the same time in '64 as the proverbial rookie fireballers. Sad to hear of his passing.

Other Former Reds that have passed and not mentioned here: Fred Whitfield 1/31/2013; Jimmy Stewart 11/24/2012; Gene Freese 6/19/2013.
Bobby Castillo passed away. The man who taught Valenzuela how to throw a screwball.

Frank Cashen passed away. Took Robinson and Foster away from the Reds.
Baseball is like church. Many attend, few understand
Here is Cashen's obituary. He built the Mets into World Champions in the 80's and was a big part of the Orioles early in his career.

Tom Veryzer died in the last week. He was the Tigers SS before Alan Trammel. He also played for the Mets and Cubs. He was only 61.

A third cousin of mine who I've worked on genealogy with commented on my photo on Facebook of Chapman coming into last night's game asked if I remembered Billy McCool and mentioned he was from Lawrenceburg (which is where this cousin grew up). I told him I remembered him as a kid, commented that Greg was just a few years older than Billy and asked if he knew him from when they were kids. I added that McCool had just passed away. He was not aware of that and added, "Billy McCool lived a block from us and was a couple years younger. I know he was tough to hit as a youngster when we played sandlot and Little League." And that was with McCool actually being three years younger than Greg (not "a couple" )
