Despite that he still put together some eye popping numbers on the mound until alcohol finally took it's toll on him. For reasons that make no sense in today's world people believed it was better to be a drunkard than to be seen as having epilepsy..
Kind of tough to imagine in today's world, but many players went to war (drafted or enlisted) back then to either be killed or have to deal with the many effects of such later.. Sad one indeed..
One paragraph in the article makes it even sadder.. "Alexander's desperate situation found relief only in his election to the Hall of Fame in 1938. He pulled himself together enough to go to Cooperstown for the first induction ceremony on June 12, 1939, and thoroughly enjoyed the time with the honorees. It was bittersweet, though, as Alex said in 1944, "I'm in the Hall of Fame, . . . and I'm proud to be there, but I can't eat the Hall of Fame.""
It should be noted that Alexander was 30 when he was drafted, and one of his contemporaries, Christy Mathewson, volunteered at the same time at age 38. Mathewson also suffered injuries in France that contributed to tuberculosis killing him a few years later. They both ended up with 373 wins.

He was just a few months older than me. So yes he was too young. He was a really good all around player for a few seasons and valuable member of those early 90's Blue Jay teams. RIP Tony Fernandez.

Former Red too of course for a brief time. Most casual fans of other teams might not know/remember that.

Wow though- this must have just happened. Literally have a tab up saying he was on life support and in a medically induced coma while the family made a decision. I guess they wound up making it.

Played third for the Reds during the strike season, but, iirc, didn't like it, and that contributed to his not coming back. The Reds had Larkin, of course. I remember begin at the final game that season and being impressed at the way he played third, not to mention the overall infield defense.

Was he the last surviving member of the Philadelphia Athletics?

Today's "The Hardball Times" has a nice article about Antonelli written by Peter Dreier.

Sorry to hear. Back in the late 60s, it seems every pack of baseball cards I bought had a Don Paveltich card in it. He was a pretty good hitter.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!
