Jordan Hotchkiss Carolina League Pitcher of the Year

Congratulations to him and to the Reds development team for finally converting him to a starter.

He was the only Hillcat recognized for any post season honor. Not bad thought that so far 3 players have been POTY in their respective leagues. (Sappelt, Torreyes and Hotchkiss)

A North Carolina kid. This is what its all about. Hopefully he'll start here next year and go from there. Saw him pitch in Lynchburg and here this year.

That's great. Hotchkiss with Webb, Fairel and Carroll could be pretty nasty next year.

Boxberger may be in the mix as well.

I think he'll still be in the bullpen for Carolina next year.

He did have a solid two innings last time out as I recall.

Hotchkiss gets my vote for organizational pitcher of the year, as well. Chapman made a late run, and Joseph has had an outstanding year, but I think that Hotchkiss was the most productive.

    +1

He has had the most consistent season of all Reds Full season pitchers. Joseph has been by far the most dominating, but Hotchkiss did what he did on a very poor offensive team. That IMO gives much more testament to the fine season he had.

At no point in the season was his ERA in the Carolina League as high as 2.60. Pretty incredible.

It is nice to see a low round draft choice from an unheralded program be rewarded for his success. Too often it is only the consensus elite prospects that draw praise. The fact that Hotchkiss has improved at each level, indicates a good work ethic that bodes well for his further development.

It seems to me that the Reds organization has not only drafted better pitching prospects, but also has also done a far better job of developing them.

You hit the nail on the head. Any scout can use a radar gun, stop watch, etc. and recognize that certain players are bigger/faster/stronger than others, but it takes a good development staff to help players reach that ceiling. Going back to the Bowden days, the scouting department clearly wasn't as advanced as it is now, but I think the same could be said for their ability to develop that talent, too.
