I'm usually completely bored by Snow Patrol, but I really like their new one, "Called Out in the Dark". The open sounds like something immediately familiar, and the chorus has a kind of jarring Moody Blues/ELO feel to it.

Interesting. Saw him at WaldenBooks back in the day at Charleston Town Center, reading a magazine article about himself. He was wearing a hand-painted jacket with his name on it, and making no effort to disguise who he was, but no one bothered him.

I've been pretty disappointed in this year's music with a few exceptions (Decemberists, Head & Heart, Civil Wars, Noah and the Whale) but some stuff I'm hearing now has me hopeful things are picking up. I like the new Ryan Adams song better than anything I've heard from him in years, and I'm also looking forward to the new Wilco release, and the songs I've heard from NeedtoBreathe sound interesting. The New Chili Peppers sounds good too, but that almost seems to be in the 'it is what it is' category.

I really like Jackson Browne's new stuff, some of the best I've heard from him since The Pretender, but why is he recording it under the name "Dawes"?

Interesting. I've heard it called boring, but that was by a Son Volt partisan, so who knows?

Then again, I liked the last album, even if there wasn't a real flow to it. If I were a Red, I would want Bull Black Nova to be my at bat music. The nerve-racking keyboard part, specifically.

    I like the new Wilco.

With exception of first 6 songs on first album Son Volt is pretty much painfully boring IMO and Jay Farrar solo live might be one of the most dour and uninspiring performers I'm ever seen.

What a wet blanket that dude is.

While i'll agree about son volt Id say wilco has been getting a pass for awhile. For all the accolades that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot gets/got i fail to get it to this day ? Forget about Summerteeth and A Ghost is born talk about painfully boring granted i havent heard the last 2 wilco releases and sky blue sky had some real good moments. I got to say tweedy for the most part lost me after Being There.Probably because i leaned more toward the alt country sounds of A.M. as opposed to the more experimentel stuff like AGIB & YHF.

This is another good example of 2 talented song writers butting heads and letting there egos get the best of them .

I couldn't stand Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I had only recently started getting into Wilco's music but that was one of the few albums I've ever listened to that actually made me angry. Just not my cup of tea, I guess. I've liked some of Wilco's stuff since then though.

I truly believe that is one of the best albums ever made. To each his own, I guess. I do think it is the most..un-Wilco-like in some ways.

Anyway, I'm listening to the new EP from the New Shouts and I cannot get enough. True, true pop with just enough Motown. It's derivative, but so full of joy that I don't really care. Great stuff. You can buy the EP here:

and there are a couple of songs for free download here:
