I noticed the other day the Giants had Mac Williamson batting 3rd and it struck me that they should definitely be hounding the Reds about Bruce.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Williamson is a guy I'd target to come back to the Reds. Him plus Okert make a decent package. Would prefer SSs Fox or Miller instead and given Crawford's stranglehold on the SS position, they could be a possibility as well.

Rosenthal had this well known tidbit this morning:

The Indians, short on outfielders, have been mentioned as possible suitors for the Reds’ Jay Bruce.

There is just one problem: Bruce added the Indians to his no-trade list in November, enabling him to block any proposed trade to Cleveland, a major-league source said.

The Indians still could acquire Bruce, but likely would need to give him some kind of financial inducement to entice him to waive his no-trade protection.

Prior to the change, Bruce’s eight-team list included the Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Athletics, Rays, Marlins, Twins and Diamondbacks, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.

Bruce substituted the Indians for the Blue Jays — and the Jays nearly acquired him in February in a three-team deal that would have sent outfielder Michael Saunders to the Angels and prospects to the Reds.
I wonder if picking up his option and guaranteeing no QO after 2017 would do the trick?

I really doubt Bruce wants his option picked up. The alternative is $1M buyout and he hits free agency off a (so far) huge season. He'll get a big payday this offseason if he hits the open market.

Hum...if we think the most likely destinations are San Francisco, New York or Chicago these are the packages I'd want (even if we had to sweeten the pot a little):

    SFG: Arroyo + Shaw/Cole
    NYM: Nimmo + Cecchini/Herrera
    CWS: Adams + Engel

I don't think that the Indians are going to be making a serious play.

    -----------

On another note, since I'm too lazy to look it up myself. Can our HO use the $1m buyout on Bruce and then make him a QO to get a compensation pick?

Sources: #Reds’ Bruce a consideration for #Dodgers. Ethier’s return uncertain; Pederson only LHH OFer. Bruce cannot block trade to LAD.

Verdugo and Barnes too much to ask?

    Nope.

    Trade negotiations 101:

Begin negotiations by asking for what you want, not for what you think you'll receive.

All it takes is for one GM to believe that you have a missing principal component in what said GM believes could be his teams' year.

I'd definitely be looking to drive up a bidding war between the Giants and Dodgers.

It helps that Brian Sabean is this decade's equivalent of (Former White Sox GM) Kenny Williams. In other words, Sabean has demonstrated a propensity to "overpay" in regards to perceived value at times.

Tracye Thompson is in a bit of a slump, and with Puig back from the DL, he is losing PT. How about him as a potential piece?

We do seem to be better matchup with the Dodgers than the Giants. If LA doesn't want to surrender Verdugo and Barnes, switch over to Verdugo and Micah Johnson. I've seen Johnson play and he does have some issues, but on the plus side: He is fast, he could lead-off or hit second, and his prime potential positions are 2B or CF.

Just an FYI, Bruce, per his contract, can block trades to the: Red Sox, Rays, Yankees, Blue Jays, Diamondbacks, Marlins, A’s, or Twins.
