per the article, they want the Reds to eat significant portions of the contract? Get little in return and thank the Bluejays for taking Votto..

Can you imagine the run scoring with Hamilton, Peraza, Votto in the top three slots? Keep Votto. Pay the money.

This is pretty much what I was saying. I'd ask Sanchez, Urena, Guerrero & Tellez to start a conversation with the Jays and offer no more than one, maybe two years of salary to deal Joey and I'd stick to my guns. The Jays would probably think Ried-Foley, Urena & Pompey with three or four years of salary would be more than a fair offer. Same if I asked the Red Sox for Moncada & Benintendi, the Yankees if I demanded Sanchez, Mateo & Frazier or the Nats for Turner, Robles, Fedde & Cole. Joey is definitely dealable, but the asking price would be to bloody painful for anyone to think about matching.
I'd only trade Votto for someone so good I wouldn't trade him for Votto.

Would the Reds brass really consider trading Votto for less than top tier player(s) and further alienate the fans? I would hope not.

Joey is hitting .421 in the second half. I didn't know numbers went that high.
Jays missed chance to buy low on Joey at ASB last season.
I guess we agree with the conclusion but not the definition of painful. The Reds paying even $1 and getting a return built around minor leaguers is not my definition of painful for the other team. The other team trading Betts is painful. Sanchez, Urena, Guerrero & Tellez with them paying the whole deal doesn't even get my attention tbh
Tim McCarver: Baseball Quotes
I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.
Since before the ink was dry on his contract, some folks have been saying we'll need to trade and, more so, throw in a lot of money for the overblown contract. While I would continue to hope for the day when contracts peak and then decline (doubtful it will ever happen), there is no question in my mind that Joey's contract even now is competitive for a top player and will not be as onerous as people think. Likewise, if he were to be traded, at this point and time, it would require elite players/prospects and not one dime (U.S. or Canadian) would go with it. This contract is well within top major league contracts (and keeps falling down the list as the years progress) that it's absurd to suggest we should pay anything on it.

I was going to come up with some unreasonable trade proposal that any team would say no to just to make sure that the other team paid like crazy for getting him. Something to the effect of "you'll take on his entire contract, plus we want four players of our choosing from anywhere in your system, and don't bother asking unless you have a top 15 farm." I knew it was unreasonable, but then I had a realization.
I realized that I'd rather just keep Votto as a Red for life at this point, hopefully let us put another Red in the HoF, and try to retain him as a coach after his playing days are over. Clearly he has an aptitude for that if his results with Hamilton are any indication. I know one day his skills will regress and that contract will probably be a big drain on us. I'm willing to pay that price to watch one of the top two greatest Reds with a bat to play.
