65 sliders, 51 fastballs, and 2 changeups is not exactly the repertoire you hope to see from a SP in the long run. Being almost exclusively a 2-pitch pitcher can work -- Patrick Corbin & Lance Lynn are 2 of the few who throw 90% or more fastball/slider and Robbie Ray & Jack Flaherty aren't too far off. And I'm glad to see him stop relying on his fastball quite so much. But I really hope he gets that 3rd pitch so they can't just sit fastball and then reliably adjust into the slider. Being able to throw that changeup with the same velo as the slider but with a different break seems like it would be a very helpful weapon for him -- especially given how hittable his fastball is if guys know they can sit on it.

Looking at his baseball savant page, that combo of 80th percentile whiff% and 23rd percentile chase rate jumps off the page to me. I suppose that actually gives him a bit more latitude than most when it comes to pitch diversity.

However, looking at his statcast data, I see he's in the strike zone only 46.7% of the time (110th of 134 qualified pitchers) and he's 107th in out of zone swing rate.

So basically, he's missing bats when guys swing, but he's not fooling people. This says to me that his effectiveness is going to be especially sensitive to his command on a given day. Obviously it's true of all pitchers, but just like we saw with Homer (who I've compared him to repeatedly), he's likely going to swing pretty regularly between dominance and disaster based on whether or not he's throwing strikes, especially with his slider.

TORONTO -- Stuck in a bases-loaded mess that was hardly his doing, Reds starter Hunter Greene went back to the pitch that has helped him unlock his full potential.

No, not the triple-digit fastball. The sharp, swing-inducing slider.

Greene used his slider to fan Matt Chapman and escape a sixth-inning jam in a tie game on Saturday afternoon, letting out a roar and pounding his chest on the way to the dugout. That capped another stellar start for Greene -- in a 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre -- and a great response to the flamethrower’s 7 1/3 no-hit innings his previous time out.

“Out of everything that Hunter’s done this year, that might’ve been my favorite moment so far,” manager David Bell said of the Chapman strikeout. “We’re gonna have a lot more of those [moments], but so far, that was impressive.”

“For me, it’s really [about] becoming a better pitcher and looking back after the season and being proud of the steps that I’ve made,” said Greene, who logged six innings and yielded one run on four hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts.

Hunter Greene's third pitch is also his slider

Greene now has two versions of the pitch. One slider looks like a 90 mph cutter, but it has the velocity and the break to run all the way across the strike zone. The other slider looks like an 88 mph splitter that drops down in the strike zone at the last second.

"He has the ability to throw the slider harder or have it shorter and slower with bigger break," Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson explained.

We should toss a bouquet Derek Johnson's way too. Nice to have a pitching coach who can help kids get sorted out quickly rather than have them repeat the same mistakes until they're in the fetal position.

BOSTON – One day after Hunter Greene signed his name inside of the Green Monster at Fenway Park, he displayed the electricity in his arm that few pitchers could match in the ballpark’s 110-year history.

He struck out seven of the first 10 batters he faced, throwing 13 fastballs above 100 mph. There were times when his slider resembled the trajectory of a frisbee.

Then as quickly as Greene started, everything fell apart. Greene went from untouchable to vulnerable, lasting only 3 2/3 innings.

"Honestly, for me, I lost the focus on staying present," Greene said.
"You do well early and you get, I don't want to say complacent, but you're happy with how you're doing and you want to continue to be on that roll.

I think that's a dangerous place to be sometimes.

The first three innings Wednesday were on a different level. He was constantly on the attack, throwing a first-pitch strike to 15 of his 17 batters on a 56-degree evening. He struck out the first four batters he faced, two strikeouts shy of the Reds’ record to begin a game.

"Nobody wants to hit 100 mph fastballs when it’s cold outside," Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson said.

Red Sox hitters, in their first at-bats, didn’t stand a chance. Greene painted the outside corner with a 101-mph fastball to strike out Xander Bogaerts. Rafael Devers whiffed on a slider in the first inning and said to himself, “Wow. Wow. Wow.” Bobby Dalbec chased a slider that ended up in the chalk of the opposite batter’s box.

What was amazing was he came out throwing as hard as he’s thrown all year for the first few hitters," Reds Manager David Bell said. "Just really blowing it by ‘em, and that’s saying a lot against those guys. Then he went to the slider and it was like they didn’t know what to do."

"It’s tough when you don’t win games and you have the rough innings or whatever, but I mean, he’s ahead of where he should be," Bell said. "The key is to keep learning along the way and I know he’ll do that."

"His future is very bright," Tyler Stephenson said. "He’s still learning. He works hard and he wants to get better. The ability to continue to learn is what is going to make him great down the road.”

It's clear the talent is there for Hunter Greene, but he still has another step to take to really be a top pitcher in this league. Easy to forget the guy is 22 years old and just over 200 professional innings in his career.

Tempting to say lets send him down to AAA for a while, but with his stuff I just can't see him doing anything but dominating without really developing. No doubt he can get away with just overpowering minor league players with his current stuff. He needs to be at this level and take his lumps. Losing a year of control aside the Reds are handling Greene the right way.
