Re: Back to the 80's ... The "Most '80s" Songs

I started listening to Sonic Youth in the 80s. They lasted three decades but EVOL, Sister and Daydream Nation from the 80s are ferocious, challenging, beautiful and potent musical ideas that deserve your attention. It was their best decade, for me.
( I don’t include Bad Moon Rising, which was the “shimmering darkness” compared to classic rock and Petty, Springsteen and Mellencamp specifically. It meant something in the culture wars of the 80s but it doesn’t resonate with me since that time.)

Re: Back to the 80's ... The "Most '80s" Songs

The start of my 80's journey...

    Moving on to...

    Ticking off parents everywhere...

To the all time most 80's video of any 80's ever...when Bill Hader's "Stefon" describes a party, this is what I picture...

    Finally, something to dance to...

Take me to the 90's please...

I maintain the '80s officially started the moment Van Halen released "Unchained".

Oh, I'd like to put The Sisters of Mercy "This Corrosion" on the table.

    That is insanely '80s.

I might have missed it but didn't see Duran Duran mentioned that much.

They very much remind me of the 80s. My best friend was a total Madonna wannabe at that age then. Her friend then dressed as Duran Duran members when they went to school. Sounded like good times

Good recognition of the Leeds goth legends. But I really think they went In a poppier, less dark direction, after first and last and always and Wayne Hussey leaving the band and starting the Mission.
So more representative Goth songs from the sisters are Marian, Some kind of Stranger, and Alice.
But this corrosion is a good representative of the keyboard based, Jim Steinman prouduced Sisters, which was a more profitable, successful direction for the band.
The goth Sisters, with Hussey, had that unique Flanged guitar sound and those cartoonishly doom laden lyrics that were uniquely mid-80s.

I know that music video was arguably the greatest music video ever made, up til at least the early 2000's. Not sure where it stands now. Awesome song by a one-hit wonder.

No list of the 80est of 80s music is complete without Never Gonna Give You Up.

80s = worst music decade of the last 100 years.

    Big disagree with that one.

I think both hold up very well. That video is absolutely romantic and thrilling. I watched it the other day- it's amazing.

The song has been redone of course and it's still great.

1984 is about the best year in music history.

The 80s are better than anything after 1995.

No to detract from your main point, which I agree with, but…Fun Fact: They (A-Ha) were NOT a one hit wonder. Their follow-up single hit the top 20.

    Anyone remember the song?

I recall it.. not the name

But it brings up a good reminder that the US is not the world

Throughout their career, a-ha has officially released 32 singles. 13 of them became top ten singles in the UK, and 14 singles have been number one on the radio lists over the world.

Peak 80's for me would be A-Ha wrestling Kajagoogoo to deafening New Order songs

Didn't this play out in the uncensored version of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax video?
