    Fostering

Does anybody here have experience as foster parents who would be willing to share their experience? My wife and I have our home open as of a couple weeks ago, and it’d be cool to get some advice or stories or whatever. We got our first call yesterday, and I kind of panicked and we turned it down, realizing I probably have some more mental preparation to do. For reference, we don’t have any kids of our own, so this would be a first child situation.

Doesn’t seem that anyone here has gone through this, but as an update, we took in an 8-month-old girl in December and it’s been an amazing experience. If somebody down the line finds this thread, I’d be happy to chat.

This should be on the awesomeness only thread. I admire that you have taken on the responsibility to care for this little person, for however long it takes. You are a hero.

That’s very sweet, but we’ve been fortunate to have had the most perfect little girl show up on our doorstep, and we feel very selfish for how attached we’ve become to her. No updates in nearly 6 months on what her future holds, but it’s honestly been the best experience of my life.

The uncertainty is brutal. If anyone is considering this path, that’s the main thing I’d take under consideration.

As an update, we’ve been approved to adopt our little one next month. It’s a dream come true. Still happy to share the experience with anyone who’s considering this process.

Awesome...as a person who was in foster care my entire childhood and was adopted when I was 11, I have nothing but the utmost respect for people like you. It takes a truly caring and patient couple to do this. We started the process to adopt our daughter when she was very young, I don't remember her exact age, but it was around 3-4. It took until she was 9 before we were actaully able to finish the process and get her to the United States. It's a very gratifying thing. Thanks for all you do!!!

As a Parent of a child with high functioning autism ( who is now 35) my wife and I have been part of a autism support system that allows parents of children with various levels of autism respite by helping out in times of crisis. It can often involve short term housing of children. We run a foundation to help parents of these kids as well.

I’d also be interested in learning more about the foundation. I work in disability services in Indiana but have connections in Arizona and would be happy to help.

We've been part of a couple groups here in AZ. Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center is the one where we help them with a program to give parents respite during trying times. Tons of stuff for kids/adults on the spectrum.... too few for parents. Many families break up when one of the kids has Autism. We went through it 25 years ago and had no support back in those days. So we are looking to help the helpers.

Could you find out if they know anyone in western Pennsylvania?

I sent a DM your way and would be interested in helping place some professionals to help out in your area.
