Blowing stacks on middle relievers was not on my bingo card and I’m not sure what to make of it in a vacuum before the offseason ends but I welcome this over the usual dog and pony show. Let’s get weird/middle-relievery.
Reds, Nick Martinez Agree To Two-Year Deal
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/...year-deal.html
The Reds are in agreement with Nick Martinez on a two-year, $26MM guarantee, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN . The deal allows the right-hander to opt out after the first season.
Martinez has spent the past two seasons in San Diego. After a three-year run at Japan’s highest level, he signed with the Padres during the 2021-22 offseason.
Martinez went into this past season battling for a rotation spot. He took four turns through the rotation while Joe Musgrove was on the injured list in early April. Once Musgrove returned, Martinez moved back into the relief role he had occupied for the majority of the preceding season.
He would ultimately appear in 63 contests, starting nine of them. Martinez worked 110 1/3 innings, allowing 3.43 earned runs per nine. He struck out 23% of batters faced behind a solid 12.6% swinging strike percentage. Martinez demonstrated average control and kept the ball on the ground on nearly 54% of batted balls allowed.
Martinez owns a 3.48 ERA in 91 relief outings over the past two seasons; he has allowed 3.41 earned runs per nine as a starter.
As one might expect, he has had better underlying marks when working in somewhat shorter stints. Martinez’s strikeout rate is a couple points higher out of the bullpen (23% against 20.9%). He has been much better at avoiding free passes as a reliever, walking 7.1% of batters faced in that role compared to an 11.2% walk rate from the rotation.

Just heard Randy Arozarena is being shopped by the Rays. I would love him in our lineup and ballpark

1. Trade India and prospects to the Mariners for Bryan Woo.
I'd be OK with Woo, but I'd aim for Miller or preferably, Gilbert (especially if they add farmhands).
2. Sign Jorge Solar - 3 year $45M
No problem with Soler
3. Sign either James Paxton or Wide Miley, 1 year $10M
Maybe I'm sippin' on the Kool-aid. but I expect a bigger name. A deal with Cleveland for Bieber would not shock me. If they decide on the Paxton/Miley-level arms I'd include Michael Wacha & Seth Lugo to the list
4. Sign Nick Martinez - 3 years $25M
Love the move. Hope he can consistently get games to Alexis. Would like to see him pitching from the pen than the rotation/ That could well mean the young starters are starting to thrive. Like the Pagan move less, but think it can still be a plus.
*****
Other possible moves (could be included in larger packages):
* A young controllable LH bullpen arm.
** A young all-around catcher (Preferably L/B) who is within a season or less of the bigs. Insurance against injury or the club deciding to move on from Stephenson.

Seattle is unlikely to trade a starting pitcher for Jonathan India.
Would India even represent an upgrade over the Mariners' in-house options at second base?
This is how India stacks up in fWAR over the past two seasons:
Jonathan India: 1.7 fWAR in 222 games
Luis Urias: 2.2 fWAR in 171 games
Josh Rojas: 3.8 fWAR in 230 games
Jose Caballero: 2.2 fWAR in 104 games (2023 debut)
Dylan Moore: 2.8 fWAR in 171 games

Latest On Dylan Cease
November 30th, 2023 at 10:05am
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/...lan-cease.html
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal suggests a scenario regarding Dylan Cease, writing that Getz & Co. prefer to wait to move him until after the top starters on the market have signed.
Clubs with current interest (e.g. Cincinnati, Baltimore), aren’t likely to play for the top names in free agency anyhow and will thus remain in play even if the Sox take their time trading Cease. And, by waiting until the top of the free agent market thins out, the Sox could potentially attract more bidders in the form of those who miss out on the likes of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, etc.

Some notes from Rosenthal's newest column:

Reds offer to Sonny was intriguing to him, moreso than the Giants pursuit of him, but the contract was less than what the Cardinals ultimately gave him.
Reds and Orioles are obvious teams to pursue a Dylan Cease trade but the Sox might wait it out.
The Marlins might be looking to trade some young starters. Ken doesn't say who would be interested but I could imagine the Reds kicking those tires.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
