    *** music trivia ***

    1. In a 1975 Playboy Magazine reader's poll of the world's best drummers, this female ranked one spot higher than legendary drummer, John Bonham. Bonham allegedly wasn't at all pleased, saying something along the lines of, "she couldn't last ten minutes with a Zeppelin number!" Who was the drummer that polled higher than Bonham in the '75 Playboy poll?

    2. What rocker once "broke into" Graceland in an attempt to meet Elvis, his idol. He took a cab over to Graceland, noticed that the lights were on in the mansion, scaled the wall, and made a mad dash up the hill, as if he was born to run that hill. He got all the way to the front door, and was about to knock when he was confronted by security. After a brief conversation, he was escorted off the property. Elvis wasn't at home at the time. He was in Las Vegas. This was the closest the singer ever got to meeting his idol. Who was the singer?

    3. This singer grew up in the small coal mining town of Pontypridd, in the United Kingdom. He came from a family of coal miners . His father was a coal miner, as were his uncles. His father wanted his son to join him in the mines but sickness intervened. At 12 years old, the youngster became sick with tuberculosis and was bedridden for two years. The doctor said the worst thing he could ever do is go into the coal mines . More than six decades later and over 100 million records sold , it's clear that getting sick with TB was a blessing in disguise. Who is he?

    1. Karen Carpenter?
    2. ?
    3. Rod Stewart?
I've been to dinner at Jimmy Buffet's house, and I've eaten it at a homeless shelter. And there's great joy and harrowing terror to be found in both places.

Carpenter was 18 here. The solo is at the end of the song. Karen was more of a jazz drummer, not a booming rock drummer, like Bonham. Apples and oranges. Karen might not have banged out a Zeppelin number like Bonham , but John couldn't drum with the technical precision that Karen displayed. Buddy Rich said his favorite drummer was... Karen Carpenter. You can see a lot of Rich in Karen's playing. Karen always saw herself as a drummer, first , and a singer, second.

    4. After seeing Elvis perform in May of 1977, Springsteen was inspired to write a song for his idol, who he had never met. He wrote the song and sent a demo to Elvis. Unfortunately, the King died before ever getting a chance to hear the song. Later the next year, three sisters from Oakland sent the song skyrocketing to the top of the charts. It peaked at #2 early in 1979. What was the song and what act sent it soaring to the top of the charts?

    5. In the mid 60's, this struggling singer was performing under the name, Gerry Dorsey. His manager decided the singer needed a rebranding, including a name change. He borrowed name of a 19th century German opera composer, who composed Hansel and Gretel. This was just the unique gimmick that the singer needed to get him some recognition and and send his career soaring. Over 140 million records sold worldwide, including 64 gold and 35 platinum albums, makes me think the unique name change was a good decision. Who is the singer?

    6. This is the only #1 hit that I can think of that was written about PE(premature ejaculation). And that comes from the singer's own words. The hit song was inspired by an actual event at a 1961 jazz festival, in which an older woman took the singer's virginity, an event that he admits was embarrassing and lasted only a few seconds. The song's title is borrowed from an old Liverpool folk song about a prostitute. It became the rocker's breakthrough hit, launching a career that has spanned more than six decades and has seen him sell more than 250 million records(albums and singles combined) worldwide.

What was this hit song that was inspired by an embarrassing sexual encounter at 16 years of age ?

    7. Humble beginnings to global footprint: On their 2005 US headlining tour, this Cincinnati indie band opted to trade time slots with their opening band, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, after experiencing several humiliating shows where a majority of the sold-out crowd left immediately after the buzzy intro act’s set. 15 years later, the band was featured on a track on Taylor Swift’s second album of 2020, Evermore, with their main songwriter having produced and integrated many of the Ohio band’s trademark sounds into both of the billion-dollar global pop star’s hit records that year.

    8. This song peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 early in 1980. The song's writer, a rock icon, revealed later that her inspiration for the song came from a child that she never had. After a brief on-and-off courtship in the late 70's with another rock icon, she became pregnant with his child. Since this happened at the height of her and her band's success, she felt it would be detrimental to her career to have the child. So , she had an abortion. The song's title bears the name that she said would have been the name of her child, had it been a girl.

What's the name of song and the songwriter and who was the filthy animal that impregnated her?

    9. He was once bandmates with Peter Greene and Mick Fleetwood in a short-lived R&B band called "The Shotgun Express" and later on was the lead Face in a band alongside future Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood. It was as a solo artist where he really made his mark on the music world , however, with 16 top ten singles in the US and 31 top tens in the UK. Who is he?

    10. This guy was raised in Brooklyn, NY, and was a NYC police officer for two years, following in the footsteps of his father and brother, who were also cops. But music was his dream and passion. He left for California, enrolled at Cal-Berkely, and fell in love with a sorority girl. She was well off; he wasn't. He was working his way through college as a receiving clerk at JC Penney and playing in bands on weekends. It was at this time that his love for this well-to-do sorority girl inspired him to write what would turn out to be one of his most enduring songs. The song was about his desire to whisk this girl off on a bus ride up to the California redwoods. It was a dream he never got to fulfill. She dumped him before he had the chance.

Who is he and what was the song?
