71. Let me tell you a little story and you can tell me the name of the song I reference in the story. There were these guys hanging out around Jacksonville about 1965. They played music , mostly instrumentals , along with some surfer tunes and other popular songs of the day. They called themselves The Classics. Anyway, after discovering that there was already a band by that name they decided they needed a new name and also a new home. They rebranded the group and moved to Atlanta, which was kind of the hub for the burgeoning southern rock scene at the time.
One day in 1967, one of the band members and the band's manager/producer played a round of golf and then headed back to the studio. On the way back, a song came on the radio that had been getting a lot of airplay down South. It was an instrumental song by a local saxophonist named Mike Sharpe. The guys started discussing the song they were hearing and thought it would be a great tune if lyrics were added to it. That's what they proceeded to do . They worked tirelessly to get the exact guitar sound they wanted, added an eerie whistle for effect, and brought in the originator of the tune(the saxophonist) to do the distinctive sax solo. The band's lead singer worked to learn how to project his voice in a way that would match the song's seductive and eerie vibe.
The song was released late in October of 1967 and climbed the charts, peaking at #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 early in 1968. After a couple of more big hits, the band's guitarist and keyboardist left to form another band in 1970. This band scored several more hits in the '70's, including taking a new version of this same song into the Top 20 in 1979.
Do you know the name of this classic song that was a Top 10 song in '68 AND a Top 20 in 1979 . Also, what was the name of the 70's group that took it to #17 on the Billboard chart in '79?
72. BONUS QUESTION--- In 1970, a sultry British singer, known for her seductive, soulful style , covered the song and took it into the Top 40 in the UK. In her version, she flipped the gender of the character in the song from a female to a male. Her version was never released as a single in the US but did very well outside of the U.S. Who is she?

I know you music junkies know this song. It was released right before Halloween in 1967. It's a favorite during that time of year.

The drummer wrote down the drunken phonetic spelling, and the band decided to keep it, feeling it fit with the song's mystical vibe. LMAO The song also included a snippet of the hymn, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."
The extended 17-minute album version was recorded from a sound check. This extended version features a lengthy organ and drum solo, with the drum solo alone lasting over two minutes. The track took up the entire second side of the album, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The single peaked at # 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Good call. I should have known. While they missed the Top 40 as singles, the two big hits from the album undoubtedly would have been #1 hits on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, which didn’t begin until mid-march of 1981. And likely, Shoot To Thrill and Hells Bells would have followed suit.
