    88. Ask most any hardcore fan of the band and they will list this song as one of the band's top 3 songs of all time. That's some pretty healthy respect for a song that never charted on Billboard's Hot 100. In fact, the song was never even released as a single. It was considered a "deep cut" or album track, though the song is the title track of the album it first appeared on. It was the very first song written by the band's main songwriting tandem. When the words to the song was FIRST penned back in 1968, the it was about a friend named Leo, and the original opening line was , "Leo, my God, why don't you come to your senses."

The song has a reprise version on the original album called "Doolin- Dalton." Written in the style of old Stephen Foster songs, the song was never a hit, according to its author, until Linda Ronstadt recorded her version of the song. While the song never charted on Billboard's Hot 100, it did peak at #20 on the Rock Digital Songs chart, but not until 2016 , and after the death of one of the band's founding member's and a co-writer of the song. It is a beloved classic of fans of the band and is a staple on 70's rock radio. Not bad for a song that was a charting failure.

    Desperado by the Eagles.

I read where Henley was 17 when he first wrote "Desperado.". In 1968, when supposedly first penned the words, he would have been 21, not 17. Whether 17 or 21, "Desperado" is a mighty fine song for someone that young to write. Glenn Frye once wrote about Henley: “I think I brought him ideas and a lot of opinions. He brought me poetry. We were a good team.”

    God, that ending...

I love her version of Warren Zevon's "Carmelita." God, she was gorgeous. An all-timer for the voice and on the hottie meter. What do you think , Roy :

She’s just a babe with that gorgeous throbbing voice. I saw her twice live. The first one she was the undercard to Neil Young at the Cinci Gardens. It was right on the cusp of her being a star and was a great show (Neil was great too despite the usual horrible acoustics). The second time was when her popularity was just exploding and she played at the Riverfront Coliseum. A great great show. I looked this up https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/linda...h-3f55903.html

    89. This song is one of my personal favorites by the artist who took an obscure Jimmy Cliff song to # 1 on the Top Rocks Tracks chart. The original was written and performed by reggae musician, Jimmy Cliff, and produced by Cat Stevens, in 1972. The track bombed on the charts. Cliff had recorded Stevens' "Wild World" a couple years earlier.

While on tour in Europe in 1981, the singer discovered the song on a cassette tape of Jimmy Cliff's music in an Amsterdam airport. He changed the arrangement from reggae-oriented to straight rock and first performed it live at Wembley Stadium in May 0f '81. He has currently performed the song live a total of 268 times over the years, turning an obscure reggae track into a bonified rock anthem.

A live version of the song was recorded in 1984 and released on the "We are the World" charity album for hunger relief in Ethiopia. It received more radio airplay than any other song on that album, besides the title track. To my knowledge, the singer has never released a studio version of the song and he never released it as a commercial single.

What's the song and the artist who rescued in from obscurity and made it a rock anthem?

    90. Two of my favorite artists of all time, one solo and one band , were beaten out for the Best New Artist Grammy, in decisions that, 50+ years later, haven't aged very well. In 1971 , my guy, Elton John, failed to win BNA and , much to my utter dismay, BOSTON had the BNA Grammy snatched from them in 1977 by a one-hit wonder band. Who knocked off Elton for BNA artist in '71 and who stole the BNA from BOSTON in '77 , in what might have been the worst decision in history?

I didn't know and had to look it up. I love me some Elton, but I understand the 71 decision and won't say it's wrong.

1977......I guess you had to be there. It's hard to explain the 70's. Just Wow.

As much as I love Elton, I can live with the '71 award. But '77... I will never understand that one. BOSTON's debut album was the best debut ever, imo.
