I cannot recall the particulars, but I believe it involves Paper Lace, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods and the song 'Billy Don't Be a Hero".

Or, I could be completely mistaken.

Who's the band below and what was their big #1 hit in America ? Also, who took their UK #1 to #1 in the US a few months later?

This band is, indeed, the English band, Paper Lace. #1 song in August of '74:

#1 in the UK in March of '74 :

#1 in America in June of '74. Cincinnati's own. Bo knows heroes:

    137.

49 years ago today, one of the best selling albums of all time hit #1 on the Billboard 200. The album remained on top for most of of that year, and even into the following year--- a total of a whopping 31 weeks at #1. No other album in history has ever spent more weeks at the top spot on the US Billboard 200 album chart. The album was awarded the Grammy for Album of the Year, and produced four Top 10 singles, including the band's only' #1 single, to date, on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and has been certified 21x Platinum by the RIAA.

Can you name the album that first hit #1 on this date 49 years ago and can you name the band's only #1 single?

hmmm. spitballing here......I'm pretty sure the Boston album would be prior to 77. Hotel California was from that era, but I suspect they had a #1 prior to that. I remember Dark Side of the Moon set sales records but that would be earlier.

That leaves Fleetwood Mac's Rumors with Stevie Nicks singing Dreams as the feature. Pretty sure they didn't have a #! prior to Dreams. From your text I'm surprised they didn't have a #1 after Dreams, but I can't point to another song that I'm SURE was a #1.

Probably have to go to Born in the USA or Thriller to find an album that sold more than Rumors.
Four top 10 hits? Dreams, The Chain, Gold Dust Woman and Don't Stop Believing?
    Final answer?

Pretty sure Rumours was the album. It sold a gazillion copies. I think Go Your Own Way was in the singles mix too.

Yes. And the other unmentioned single is You Make Loving Fun. I am positive neither Gold Dust Woman nor The Chain were released as singles. Rumors was/is referred to in the radio - specifically Rock AOR Radio - business as an open album. Meaning every track received significant radio air play.

Began its historic run of 29 weeks at the top spot in 1977 on April 2 :

Rumours produced the band's only # 1 hit single(kinda hard to believe, isn't it?) :

I never saw Fleetwood Mac live. I did see Stevie Nicks at Riverbend in the early 2000’s all swirly and spooky.

    138. As mentioned above, Rumours began its historic run of 29 weeks at the top spot of the Billboard 200 album chart in the year 1977 on this date. During that run of 29 non-consecutive weeks at the top spot from April 2 through November 26, there were just two albums that interrupted that run. One occurred for a five week period in April and May(it was a band) and the other was for one week in July(solo artist).

Can you name the band and the solo artist who interrupted the Mac's 29 week run at the top in 1977?

    139. Rumours didn't fade away after its historic run at the top of the Billboard 200 in 1977 . It came back very early in 1978 to claim the top spot for two more weeks , before being dethroned from the top spot for good. Still, throughout the decades, the album has reappeared on the chart. In 2020, spurred on by a viral Tik-Tok video, set to Stevie Nicks vocals of "Dreams," Rumors re-entered the Billboard 200 Top Ten at #7 . The album has spent more than 550 weeks on the Billboard chart over these many years , making it one of the most durable and longest charting albums in history.

Can you name the album that finally dethroned Rumors from #1 for good in 1978? This album proceeded to have its own run of 24 consecutive weeks at #1 . You know the album, don't you?

Everyone owned a copy of this album. I'll go with Eagles (Hotel California) as the band. The solo artist is a mystery to me. One question remains: Were they lip-synching in '77?

I still break out in a frenzy of air guitar at the end of Hotel California.

I only just now realized this but these three songs were released in three consecutive years in the ‘90s. Because I’m nothing if not impatient, I’ll kick it off with the first one. Here’s “29 Ways”, a track that appeared on Marc “Walking in Memphis” Cohn’s 1991 debut album.

The song was written by blues musician Willie Dixon, who died just a few months after Cohn’s version was released. It’s unclear if Dixon liked Cohn’s adaptation or if he died upon hearing it so he could get a head start on turning over in his grave. A belated RIP to Mr. Dixon.

I see that my trivia question was even less of a hit than Marc Cohn’s “29 Ways”. Now that we know the two-digit prime number in question is indeed 29, I’ll reveal the second song. It’s simply titled “29” and it’s from the Gin Blossoms, released in 1992 as part of their New Miserable Experience album. It’s easy to forget what a big deal these guys were for a few years, as the NME album went quadruple platinum. It featured hits such as “Hey Jealousy”, “Follow You Down”, and “Found Out About You”.

I saw the Gin Blossoms in concert a couple of times, since it felt like they were playing in Va. Beach or Norfolk about every other week. They were part of a steady rotation of post-grunge alternative rock acts that came through, including Toad the Wet Sprocket, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Better Than Ezra, Blues Traveler, the Bodeans, Smithereens, and others I’m sure I’m forgetting. I was rarely sober for any of these shows. I had a friend who didn’t drink and was happy to be designated driver, so I took full advantage. Those were my Roy Tucker-lite years. Ah, the (hazy) memories.

Sadly, songwriter and guitarist Doug Hopkins committed suicide in 1993 at age 32, following a long battle with mental health issues and alcoholism. The band would go on to have a few more hits but nothing approaching the success of New Miserable Experience.

The third and final song in answer to this question was released by an all-time rock icon. Can anyone name the song and performer?

I loved the song '29' by the Gin Blossoms. I played that cd to its literal death. My cd had a different cover than that. Mine is the original cover before the cd broke big. The second was a marketing ploy by the record company in an effort to familarize the public with the band members.

It's truly a shame about Doug Hopkins. He simply wrote great songs, both lyrics and music. Drugs are evil.

“29” has long been my favorite song from that album. Second favorite was probably “Allison Road”. Definitely a shame about Hopkins. What might’ve been.
