If this were his first look at MLB pitching I would agree, but this is the third time he's been called up and he is 25. It's literally now or never for Hinds if he's going to help the Reds win games and stick with the big club. Ask Barrero and CES how not performing over multiple chances goes.

It is the first game of the year for him at mlb level. Like I said, I am not sold on him, but come on.

Nobody in history has ever come back from an 0-3 game to be any good. Ever.

How about 5 BB and 39 SO in their first 98 PA? Hinds might be improved from where he was a year ago, but he won't have long to show it before the next man is up.

The main thing that bothered me about Hinds last night was how he was bailing out (towards LF) on those sliders. He has no chance if he does that. Maybe that's a bad habit he has vs LHs. We'll see how he fares tonight vs a RHP.

Hinds deserves more than two weeks, before giving up on him. That's an extremely short time, before throwing in the towel on your best hitter in AAA.

I don’t think people will look at 1 game or even 10. More about what’s his approach and contact rate. Of course they need to give him about a month at least. Unless he goes like it was posted 1-20 with 10 K.

    Lance McAlister
The Book: Rece Hinds was 0 for 3 with 2 K and a shallow fly out in his return last night. He saw 14 pitches: 0 fastballs.
    5 Change-ups
    4 Splitters
    4 Sliders
    1 Knuckle curve

He had 6 misses on 8 swings: Three on a change-up, two sliders, one splitter.

He went 0 for 2 vs LHP Robbie Ray, 0 for 1 vs RHP Keaton Winn.

Hinds started his MLB career 11 for 22 with 5 HR. He's gone
    6 for 70 since.

He has a new approach at the plate. It has served him well at Triple-A and in spring training.

He will still have to prove he can hit something offspeed and/or with a wrinkle before he gets a MLB fastball. Unless some pitcher has made a terrible mistake.

The latest structure of the Reds' outfield
    Charlie Goldsmith Apr 14, 2026
When Elly De La Cruz is asked about the impact of adding Rece Hinds to the Cincinnati Reds’ big league roster, De La Cruz lights up.

“He has been hot,” De La Cruz said. “He was hot in spring training. He can help. He has mucho power.”

This call-up looks different for Hinds.

The 2024 call-up was an incredible story: He was only expected to stick on the big league roster for a couple of days, but one homer led to another and Hinds ended up in the lineup for a couple of weeks. His flash in the pan didn’t last, and he only played in 24 big league games.

In 2025, Hinds was called up three times. He played in 15 total games, and he was a platoon player most of the time. Hinds never played more than four games in a row, and he was used as a role player who gave the Reds a few spot starts when injuries piled up.

This call up is the best chance that he has had.

“We don’t expect him to come here and be the savior,” Francona said. “We want him to play the best baseball he can.”

    0/4 tonight. 15 pitches. 2 Fastballs.

    PA 1. Slider x2
PA 2. Splitter, Cutter, Sinker, Slider x3
    PA 3. 4S Fastball, Sweeper x3, 4S Fastball
    PA 4. Slider, Sinker

He's gonna have to show he can hit stuff that moves or Bleday is going to be up sooner rather than later.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Right now he's not even hitting the fastball. He was late on Mahle's 4 seamer

Re: A thread for Rece Hinds

Rece is the longest tenured player with the last name Hinds in MLB history. Sam Hinds played in 29 games as a 23-year old pitcher for the Brewers in 1977.

He also brings the best name & number combo back to the Bigs: “Hinds 57”.

So if nothing else, there’s that. But some hits would be nice too.
