Elly De La Cruz Has Been Fantastic in 2026
Continue Reading HereElly De La Cruz has been fantastic. He's slashing .261/.337/.523 early in the season, which would give him a career high OPS by 50 points. He's already slugged six home runs and five doubles, which is why his slugging percentage is so high.
And he's doing this without swinging a lot, only posting a 39 percent swing rate and a 55 percent zone swing rate. But this has improved his out-of-zone swing rate, which is only 24 percent as of Monday.
As always, his base running has been electric. De La Cruz has manufactured multiple runs on his own this season, which has led to an above-average Baserunning Run Value, per Baseball Savant.
MLB.com's Mark Sheldon recently highlighted De La Cruz's improved ability to hit as a right-handed hitter this season as one of the early emergences that should continue all season.
"Last season, the switch-hitting De La Cruz had five of his 22 overall home runs in 200 right-handed at-bats. His OPS was also more than 200 points lower from the right side than left," "In 2026, De La Cruz showed marked improvement.
Entering Saturday, he already has four homers in only 26 right-handed ABs and six dingers overall. His OPS is better righty (1.066) than lefty (.819).

I was worried about his shoulder yesterday after his tumble across home plate.

Reds escaped tense moment with Elly De La Cruz, and Terry Francona should act accordingly
Read Full Article HereFor now, it appears as though the Cincinnati Reds dodged a major bullet. Reds' superstar Elly De La Cruz had an awkward slide into home plate on Sunday afternoon and appeared to hurt his right shoulder. No news is good news, however. De La Cruz stayed in the game, and there was no mention of injury during Terry Francona's postgame comments to reporters
That's certainly a relief, but perhaps Francona should give De La Cruz a day off during Monday's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. After De La Cruz played all 162 games during the 2025 season, the Reds manager stated his desire to give the shortstop more rest this season. After Sunday's injury scare, Monday's game on the road in Tampa seems like the perfect time to do so.
