He has been elite (99th percentile) in both exit velocity and patience.

Talking balls and hitting the snot out of the ball are usually a good combination.

One Offseason Move That’s Paying Off For Cincinnati Reds So Far

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez established himself as a premier power hitter during his first stint with the team, which lasted from 2015 to 2021. The 34-year-old returned to the Reds in February, and he's one of the reasons why they're atop the NL Central at 13-8.

Suarez is hitting .270 with a .774 OPS, three homers, and 11 RBIs over 21 games thus far. The 5-foot-11, 213-pounder is third on the team in OPS behind first baseman Sal Stewart (1.040) and shortstop Elly De La Cruz (.874).

The three players represent different aspects of Cincinnati's roster. De La Cruz is the franchise cornerstone, a homegrown talent who broke out in 2024 and could earn his third straight All-Star nod this year.

Stewart could be its next young star, as he was its No. 3 prospect in 2025 per MLB Pipeline and could win NL Rookie of the Year honors this season.

Meanwhile, Suarez is the win-now free-agent acquisition. The Reds signed the native Venezuelan to a one-year, $15 million deal with a $16 million mutual option for 2027, so he's on a shorter commitment than his younger peers.

However, winning teams need reinforcements from the open market to stay successful, and that's exactly what Suarez has helped Cincinnati do thus far.

Lowe has to be in the lineup along with Geno and Sal. They can figure out how to do that(Geno at third, or Sal at second) easy enough. Stop batting two automatic outs at the top of the order, and let Lowe hit behind Geno to give him some protection. I'm about at the point where Myers needs more looks playing CF vs RHP if Friedl keeps being useless. You can bat the CF 9th if Lowe is in there for Hayes.

I don't completely agree with the batting order, but those are the right players for now. I'd either lead-off McLain and move the top 4 down a spot or flip-flop McLain and Hinds. I don't want a sub .300 slugging % hitting fifth.

Is Cincinnati Reds lineup on verge of breaking out of MLB-worst start?

The Reds are off to one of their best three-week starts to a season. But until a pair of three-run rallies in the final two innings of their weekend sweep in Minnesota, that start had little to do with a lineup that is still hitting a league-worst .202 and that needed the aid of five unearned runs to cover the margins of two of the wins in that sweep.

For all the success on the mound, with the gloves and in the standings, is it too early to be concerned about a lineup that came into the year with big expectations with the power injections of free agent slugger Eugenio Suárez and a first full year of rookie Sal Stewart?

“Part of my job is to be concerned about everything,” manager Terry Francona said. “But I trust in our guys. Guys with (backs of) baseball cards, they’re going to get to their level.”

Before their series finale against the Twins, the Reds ranked last in the majors in six categories:

Runs: 71 (tied with the Mets and Royals)

Batting: .203

Doubles: 21

Slugging: .329

OPS: .626

Batting with men in scoring position: .181 (28-for-155 with 47 strikeouts)

As for that last one, it was 20 points worse than the 29th-ranked team – and went down to .179 after a 2-for-13 Sunday that included TJ Friedl's three-run double in the ninth and Rece Hinds' two-run double in the 10th for most of the late-inning runs in that 7-4 series finale.

“It’s not been as easy scoring runs as we’d certainly like it to be, but as long as they don’t either panic or feel sorry for themselves, they’ll figure it out,” Francona said.

Reds Breakthrough Moment From TJ Friedl Might Be Bigger Than It Looks

It took him 21 games, but TJ Friedl finally recorded his first extra-base hit of the 2026 season and it helped power the Cincinnati Reds to an extra-innings victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon.

Friedl was the catalyst for the Reds offense in 2025. He owned a .364 on-base percentage and fit the mold of what Reds manager Terry Francona was looking for in his leadoff hitter.

Regardless of the method, Friedl found a way to get on base. No other Reds player with 150 or more at-bats reached base with more regularity last season.

The Reds need the 2025-version of TJ Friedl to lead the way. That's why it was so disappointing to see Friedl struggle early and often in 2026.

Three of the Reds bats have been producing during the early-going. Sal Stewart is arguably the frontrunner for the NL Rookie of the Year Award at the moment with a .278/.383/.595 slash line and seven home runs. Elly De La Cruz has been crushing baseballs since the season began and owns a 134 wRC+ and an .859 OPS. Eugenio Suárez started out a little slow, but he's rallied of late and is hitting .256 with a .410 slugging percentage, three homers, and a 106 wRC+.

That's the heart of the Reds batting order, but with both Friedl and Matt McLain struggling to begin the season, the opportunities for the aforementioned trio to drive in runs has become rather difficult. Add in the fact that Ke'Bryan Hayes has just three hits to begin the season, and the Reds' 9-1-2 hitters have brought Cincinnati's offense to a standstill.
