    180. On this day 32 years ago, May 9, 1994, the English band WET WET WET released a cover of a song that originally peaked at # 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 way back in 1968. The WET WET WET cover , which was featured in the movie , Four Weddings and a Funeral , set a record for a UK-based act by spending 15 consecutive weeks at #1 on the UK Singles chart. The single sold nearly 2 million copies in the UK, making it the best selling love song ever in the UK. Do you know the song and the band who originally released the song late in 1967?
The Troglodytes (shortened to Troggs). What a wide range they had musically from this song.

    To this one.

Some say “Wild Thing” is one of the first heavy metal songs.

This was one of the songs played when I was in a band when I was in the 8th grade. I bought a bass guitar from a pawn shop in downtown Dayton. It was next door to the Mayfair Burlesque. We would ride our bikes to Town and Country shopping center and then catch a Metro bus to downtown Dayton. We’d wander downtown. I remember seeing the poster for Busty Russell st the Mayfair. First time I saw real boobs.

The band lasted the summer. We played at a pool party for our only gig. It did attract girls. This was like 1966.

Kinda ironic that when the band went their separate ways, that Bachman-Turner had much more success than Burton Cummings. Randy Bachman had a little fun at Cumming's expense with the song 'Hey you'.

Man, Midnight Special was so much fun. I rarely ever missed it. Bands actually played and sang live. DO you all have a favorite MS performance ?

Love Linda. One of the true natural beauties of all time. Did you know that Linda covered more Warren Zevon songs than any other artist? Hasten Down the Wind , Carmelita, Mohammed's Radio, and of course, Poor, Poor Pitiful Me, just to name a few. She did good things for Warren's career.

Talk about slaying... Manfred Mann's Earth Band slayed Bruce's song on the Midnight Special. They made it their own. One of my favorite MS performances. They were on fire that night! I'll watch this performance at least a couple or three times a year.

    What a performance! Enjoy!!!

*** HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES FROM RZ MUSIC THREAD ***

    181. Today is my 79th birthday. Can you identify me ?

I was the founder and lead singer of the band, Spirit . We had the hit song "I Got a line on You." (Peaked at #25 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1969 )

I left Spirit to form the band Jo Jo Gunne. We took our band name from the Chuck Berry song. We had the hit song "Run, Run, Run." (Peaked at #27 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1972)

My biggest hit came from my second solo album. It was the title track of the album and peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 and featured slide guitar work from a famous rock guitarist of a legendary band.

I composed the score for the NBC version of The Office ; also the entire score of Nightmare on Elm Street 5 ; the soundtrack for NCIS: Los Angeles and much more.

Who am I and what was the title of my biggest 70's hit. Some say it's the best Yacht Rock classic ever.

Spirit wrote timeless music. It sounds as fresh today as it did back then. Jay Ferguson is the person that you are thinking of. And 'Thunder Island' is his biggest hit.

Here is Spirit song written by Jay Ferguson that always gets my toe a'tapping. "Sends them reaching out for their dollar"

Jo Jo Gunne "Run. Run. Run." lyrics.

You was born outside of the law
    Run

    Run run run
    Run run run
    Doo doo doo
    Doo doo doo doo
    Run run run
    Run run run
    Oh, load up your mama
We'll ride on out to the line
    Run
    Run
    Run
    Oh
    Run
    Doo doo doo
    Doo doo doo doo
    Run run run

    Run run run
    Run run run
    Oh welcome to the party
We're all just papers in the wind
    Run

Joe Walsh did the lead slide guitar work on this track, which contributed to its signature sound.

    My favorite Jay Ferguson lyric:

They treat you like a dog, but you're only human
You miss your home, Lord, you miss that woman
The captain laughs, he says, "You boys want some sex?
You can squeeze the sails, you can lick the decks"

A couple of more ON THIS DATE IN ROCK HISTORY questions:

    182. On this date , MAY 10, in 1969 this band played a special performance at the White House , as guests of Tricia Nixon. According to the band's frontman, they snorted cocaine off of Abraham Lincoln's desk in the library, which they had been given access to for their dressing room. One bandmember was so high and intoxicated that he fell off the stage at least five times during the set in what was described as a "notorious and bad" performance. The bandmember who kept falling off the stage was also seen hitting on LBJ's daughter in front of her husband.

    Who were these bad boys?

    183. On this date in 1964, this British gal made her TV debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, singing her hit that peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and # 4 on the UK Singles charts. It was her debut solo single. This same song charted several more times .

In 1976, a Scottish pop rock band of teen idols took it again to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the UK singles chart. My gal, Nicolette Larson, took the song to #53 in 1982. Her record was produced by her hubby, Andrew Gold. The Tourists also covered the song( #4 UK Singles) in '79 and Samantha Fox took the song to #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989 . The song's writer , Mike Hawker, wrote the song for his new bride, Jean Ryder.

Can you name the singer who debuted the song on The Ed Sullivan Show on this date in 1964 and can you name the Scottish pop boy band who made it a big hit again in 1976?
